Why Dylan Minnette Quit Acting After 13 Reasons Why and Scream

After the biggest role of his career, Dylan Minnette took a conscious step away from his acting career a few years ago — and now he’s revealing what influenced that decision.

In an interview on The Zach Sang Show with his band Wallows, Minnette, 27, admitted he was “thinking about” returning to acting as he reflected on his break after 13 reasons why when he was “lucky enough to find success in it”.

“I was involved 13 reasons why and it was really popular and definitely peaked in — so far — what I had in acting. But it also started to feel like work,” he said. “And I was in a very fortunate position where I was — it was always fun, always really inspiring, but as soon as it just started feeling like work, I was like, well, I feel as Wallows, and music is that passion we’ve always had as a group that we need to go all the way, and as much as we can. And I feel like now I’m in a position where I can do that for a while and take this as far as possible.”

Minnette starred as Clay Jensen on the Netflix series, which premiered in 2017 and ran for four seasons, ending in 2020. Two years later, he recurred in Hulu’s award-winning limited series Relegation and the fifth installment of Scream.

He said he knows he’s “incredibly privileged and fortunate to be in a position where he’s like, ‘This is starting to feel like a job, so now I’m going to do this and it’s going to be my job.'”

“It’s crazy, but that’s how it works, and I just follow what seems inspiring,” he added.

However, there is a good chance that it will return to viewers’ screens in the future.

“I feel like I have something to give, and that’s probably acting,” he said. “I feel like I’m starting to feel the inspiration for it again. At some point, when we’ve fulfilled our Wallows duties and we’re all ready to take a break as a band, or just a moment, then I’ll have the perfect inspiration to do something.”

He was close to returning last year, he told Sangu, but the writers’ and actors’ strike got in the way. “It just didn’t work, so I really – I thought about it.”

Before he got the lead role on 13 reasons why — which received a lot of backlash for glamorizing teenage suicide, as it told the story of tapes a teenager (Katherine Langford) left with her friends after she took her own life — Minnette has appeared on various TV shows since his debut on Drake & Josh in 2005.

He acted in Two and a Half Men, Lost, Grey’s Anatomy and Escape from prison (as a younger version of Wentworth Miller’s character), and played the first son of Jerry Grant Jr. Scandal.
