Judi Dench Says She Doesn't Have Anymore Movies in the Works amid Eyesight Loss: 'I Can't Even See!'

Judi Dench’s acting career could end soon.

The Oscar winner was recently asked by a journalist at the Chelsea Flower Show in London if she had any upcoming projects.

Dench, 89, replied: “No, no. I can’t even see!”, according to the deadline.

The Belfast actress has macular degeneration in her eyes, which can cause permanent and rapid loss of central vision, according to the Mayo Clinic. This is the cause no. 1 vision loss in people over 50 years old.

She first revealed that she had been diagnosed with macular degeneration in 2012, after speculation about her eyesight began.

Dench spoke about her retirement after more than 65 years of acting on stage and screen, making her debut in 1957. Her last film appearance was in the 2022 Christmas comedy. Spiritualized.

During a 2021 event for the London-based Vision Foundation, he explained how she coped with her deteriorating eyesight when it came to reading scripts.

“You find a way to just get by and get over things that you find very difficult,” Dench admitted. “I had to find another way to learn lyrics and stuff, and that was to have my awesome friends repeat them to me over and over and over.”

During an appearance on the site in February 2023 The Graham Norton Show, Dench has noted that as her eyesight deteriorates, it becomes more difficult to remember lines since she has a photographic memory.

“I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines, but tells me where they appear on the page,” Philomena said the star. “I used to find it very easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do anything Twelfth night now.”

Despite not making any films, Dench co-authored a memoir Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent with Brendan O’Hea, which hit the bookshelves last month.

“Shakespeare is my passion,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “It used to cost ninepence to go to the Old Vic and sit in the gallery, so we went to see Richard Burton and John Neville. This was before the Beatles, so people just went crazy. I never thought for a single second that I would be a part of that as my first job.”
