Residents of New York recently felt that they were living in a sci-fi adventure.
On November 2, a resident noticed a green liquid pouring from sewer grates near the World Trade Center. Dan Pantelo shared his findings at x (formerly known as Twitter) with a photo of bright green liquid surrounding a sewer grate and spilling onto city streets.

“So right now there is literal green sludge rising from the ground next to the World Trade Center,” Pantelo wrote.
Pantelo asked other X users if anyone knew what was causing the green liquid and wrote ua subsequent post“Can someone explain this or are we just living in full Gotham rn.”
The green color was caused by the dye. A disclaimer was added to the first post that read: “This is water full of green. Plumbers often use a harmless, fluorescent green dye to detect leaks in water and sewer systems.”
According to the National Park Service, color tracking is a standard practice used to monitor water movement. The technique “helps scientists visualize how water moves from one place to another,” notes the National Park Service.

After Pantelo shared the original photo, he returned to the scene the next day and gave an update. “UPDATE: It’s still there, people walk casually by it, sometimes a small crowd gathers around and stares at it,” Pantelo wrote.
Despite the disclaimer, Pantelo joked that he wasn’t convinced the liquid was just colored liquid. “Contrary to the community statement, I think the sludge is a radioactive discharge. Source? Divine intuition,” he wrote.

After Pantel’s initial post, X users rushed to reply and joked that the water resembled something from the movie, many of which quoted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Ghost busters.
One user edited the original photo to include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles logo and one of the Ninja Turtles popping out of a sewer grate, and the post simply read, “I love this comic.”
Meanwhile, another user wrote: “Ghostbuster’s slime was pink. This is Ninja Turtle Ooze.”
Others noted the fluid’s similarities to the episode Sponge Bob SquarePants and the movie Stranger.
“Are Alien and Predator fighting in the subway again?” wrote one user.

While some users were shocked by the green color, this isn’t the first time NYC has implemented color tracking. One X user published image of green liquid in Brooklyn subway station, trans USA Today. The user captioned the post: “Looks good!”
