As silly, shabby and clumsy as they look, hippos are actually in the running for the title of the most dangerous animal on the planet. Part of it comes down to their terrible attitudes – they’re actually willing to fight anything that gets too close to them. They’re also huge, which means they don’t have much to fear when it comes to defending their turf. We’ll explain why hippos are so aggressive, what to do if you run into one and much more.

Hippos are extremely territorial and have no real defense against intruders other than fighting, so hippos tend to attack anything they perceive as a threat. On top of that, hippos fight each other all day long as they compete for resources and social status, so they’re pretty much always ready to fight.
