Why is ADR getting closer to ECI?
The Association for Democratic Reform (ADR), a watchdog group set up by the IIM in 1999, has written to the Election Commission seeking action against political parties that do not disclose details of criminal records. by order of the Supreme Court of India. .
“ADR asks to initiate strict action against the insolvent political parties contested in the 2023 parliamentary elections to be held in Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Karnataka, the 2022 parliamentary elections to be held. held in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab and the 2021 National Assembly elections to be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry’s UT,” the letter read.
The ADR is an independent watchdog that regularly expresses concern about political parties’ nomination of members with criminal records. Following the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, according to ADR, a total of 43% of newly elected representatives were prosecuted.
