Why Isn’t Arcane Getting a Season 3? All About the League of Legends Series' Final Season and What Spinoffs Are Coming Next

Netflix’s Mysteriouslyacting Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell ended season two on an intense note — and fans weren’t ready to say goodbye.

Viewers waited three years in between Mysteriously season 1 and season 2, only to find out that the series will not be renewed for a third installment.

“From the very beginning, since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of Mysteriously ends with this second season,” co-creator Christian Linke said in a June 2024 statement. Mysteriously is based on a popular online game League of Legendsreleased by Riot Games in 2009, the Emmy-winning adaptation of the beloved game follows sisters Vi (voice of Steinfeld) and Jinx (voice of Purnell) as they find themselves on opposing sides in a war between the utopian city of Piltover and the suburban district of Zaun.

2nd season Mysteriouslywhich consisted of nine episodes, ended with some major challenges. Vi and Jinx reconcile and fight side by side against their father Vander (JB Blanc). In order to save her sister, Jinx sacrifices herself and seemingly dies in a grenade explosion. However, in later scenes, Caitlyn (Katie Leung) suggests that she may have escaped.

Meanwhile, Jayce (Kevin Alejandro) convinces Viktor (Harry Lloyd) to release all the people he’s been controlling with his mind, and both sacrifice themselves in the process. This effectively ends the battle fought by Viktor and the Empire of Noxus against the citizens of Piltover and Zaun. The two societies are finally united and Sevika (Amirah Vann) is appointed as the new member of the council.

Plus, after a season of ups and downs, Vi and Caitlyn seem to have a happy ending as a couple.

While fans were disappointed to see Mysteriously to end so soon, Linke and his co-creator Alex Yee made a deliberate decision to carry out their initial vision despite the series’ success.

“We always had a certain story in mind,” Linke told CinemaBlend in November 2024. “Look, you could have stretched it, I’m sure… [but] we’ve all seen TV shows where it’s obvious the writers are running out of steam.”

He continued: “It’s been nine years for us, with these characters. I think there’s an aspect of responsibility in this, where we are, that’s what we had in mind.”

However, Linke was “a bit anxious” to hear fan feedback about the series finale.

“I don’t know how many TV shows you’ve seen with a happy ending. The list isn’t very long, so it’s scary,” he told GamesRadar+, adding, “I’m really proud of what we did with the final act.”

Similar to many Mysteriously fans, Purnell is sad to be leaving the show and her character behind.

“I’m going to miss Jinx,” she said at MCM Comic-Con, per Daily Express. While she agreed that the series was short-lived, Purnell said she “would rather end it when the time is right than do another season and disappoint the fans.”

Meanwhile, Harry Lloyd, who voiced Viktor, shared on Instagram what he had Mysteriously “withdrawal problems” after the show’s finale.

The Mysteriously The creators have big plans for League of Legends universe: “Mysteriously it was always considered the first step,” Linke told Collider in November 2024.

That same month, the co-writer spoke with Twitch streamer Necrit94 and revealed that he and Yee were working on three new stories.

“Noxus, Ionia and Demacia are getting plays and they are [the] next steps in this cinematic universe. We’re far from done, we’re going wide, we’re looking at every region and now we have the ability to build a platform to tell new stories and continue others,” he said.[The] the next series [has been] in development for about a year.”

Although it sounds like another series could be coming soon, viewers have been waiting for three years Mysteriously season 2 to hit the screens, mainly because of the long-term work on the animation.

“One animator can produce up to, like, four seconds of animation per week. There are 24 frames every second, and each frame is hand-animated,” Linke explained to Collider. “That’s why it takes so long and why no one has ever done this. It’s a huge effort, with hundreds of people working for a season.”
