Why Jennifer Lopez Says Her Stylist Begged Her Not to Wear Iconic 2000 Green Versace Gown

The now iconic green Versace dress worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards almost didn’t live up to its moment.

Lopez’s stylist at the time, Andrea Lieberman, encouraged her not to wear the dress because other celebrities had been photographed in it months before.

“It was a dress that other people had already worn. My stylist said, ‘Please don’t wear it. Someone else has worn it.’ I said, ‘Well, you bought it, and it looks the best, so I’ll wear it.’ And so I did. And it caused quite a stir,” Lopez explained, looking back on 17 of her biggest fashion moments during an interview with Vogue.

“I think it’s always been a collaboration with all the stylists I’ve worked with,” she continued. “I worked with Andrea Lieberman for many years, and then I worked with Rob [Zangardi] and Mariel [Haenn] until today and it has always been a collaboration.”

The multi-hyphenate compared the look of the dress to Marilyn Monroe’s white halter from The seven-year itch.

“I guess every generation needs its own iconic type of Marilyn dress, and this is that dress for this generation,” Lopez said. “Why did it happen? It was just a moment when the wind blew, I went on stage, and it just happened.”

That same year, Lopez drew just as much attention with her all-white outfit for the Video Music Awards, which consisted of a sheer tank top, low-rise jeans, and a bandana.

“This is a lot of people’s favorite Halloween costume,” the singer said, noting that it wasn’t her first choice.

“Again one of those things where I had this big dress and everything,” she explained. “[Sean “Diddy” Combs] at the time, who was called Puffy, he was like, ‘You just have to put on a pair of white jeans and a t-shirt.’ And I asked ‘What?’ But I kind of liked it, so I put it on.”

Listening to her instincts is something Lopez has continued to this day, including during her time Saturday night live appearance earlier this month.

She noted that her black jacket, pants and white top outfits she wore during her performance of “Can’t Get Enough” were something that were “thrown together”.

“I just liked them all together. I started mixing and matching things,” Lopez explained.
