Good news, Yellowstone fans — a production for creator Taylor Sheridan’s latest series Landman is well underway in Texas. And according to star Jon Hamm, it will be worth the wait.
“We’re already halfway there,” Hamm, 53, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Unlike Sheridan’s other shows, however, the subject matter isn’t centered on modern cowboys or ranchers — although open spaces and businessmen clashing with politicians certainly play a role.

“It’s not cowboy-oriented at all,” he said Crazy people alum says of Landman, which also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Ali Larter. The upcoming series is based on an 11-part podcast Boomtown, which focuses on the 21st century oil boom in West Texas.
“It’s more in the oil world,” Hamm continues. “It’s based on oil speculators and what they used to call landmen, which are guys who run around trying to get mineral rights and land in the hopes of speculating and finding oil.”
He adds, “There’s a lot of oil underground here in Texas, and they’re always trying to find it.”

However, getting rich is hardly as simple as drilling where the geology experts tell you. “There’s all the political stuff that comes with it,” Hamm says.
The dramatic series is set to premiere in 2025. According to a press release from Paramount+, where the series will air, Landman will be “a contemporary tale of the pursuit of fortune in the world of oil rigs … an up/down tale of the rogues and wild billionaires fueling booms so big they’re reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
“There’s a lot of back and forth, a lot of intrigue and things like that,” Hamm notes. “It’s Taylor Sheridan and it’s obviously very well written. It’s very well researched. It’s a story very well told and I think it’s an interesting look at what happens when it comes to how we get the things that make up our cars and our lives and our airplanes and everything in our modern world goes.”

Hamm says he already believes fans will love it.
“It’s got Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore, so the cast is great and it was great fun to work on,” explains the star. “And obviously, Taylor Sheridan is in charge of everything, so it’s a great project.”
He adds: “It’s a good story. People will enjoy it.”
