Why Juanes Has Never Done a Crossover Song in English: 'I Don't Think It's Necessary' (Exclusive)

Juanes has a passion for singing in his mother tongue.

The Colombian musician, 52, told PEOPLE at the Toronto International Film Festival — where his upcoming film will Pimpinero: Blood and oil had its world premiere — that he doesn’t “think it’s necessary” to make music in English.

Juanes, born Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, said: “My English is not perfect. When you start singing in another language, it’s really hard, you know? Because you have to think a lot more about the pronunciation of the words and you lose your soul.”

The Grammy winner pointed out that he appreciates music in English, but does not want to create it.

“I’ve been doing music for years and years, but now I don’t think it’s necessary to sing in English. I feel connected to my language — I still think in Spanish and dream in Spanish,” he told PEOPLE.

Juanes is performing at Grana Lund in June 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Juanes’ new film, in which he stars alongside Laura Osma, Alejandro Speitzer and Alberto Guerra, had its world premiere at the festival on Monday, September 9. The film will be released on Prime Video later this year, and he directed the film Narcos directed by Andrés Baiz and follows three brothers “as they descend into intrigue, corruption and the moral chaos of the world of organized crime”.

The 26-time Latin Grammy winner, who makes his theatrical debut in the film, also told PEOPLE the experience was “amazing.”

“I really enjoyed it [it]… It was far from my normal life,” he said. “But at the same time, for me, acting is a small way of creating art. I also acted when I was little, with my family. My brother had a 16mm camera and made home TV style stuff.”

Juanes is also currently on his Vida Cotidiana World Tour in support of his 2023 album, with upcoming stops in San Bernardino, Paraguay; Santiago, Chile; Saint Louis, Missouri; and Los Angeles.

Earlier this summer, he opened up about his tour experience with an Instagram post that included videos and photos of the performance.

“I can’t stop thinking about how much fun we had on this leg of the European tour. Thank you for the love and the opportunity to sing for everyone,” he captioned the post.
