The San Francisco Coyote is in his “couch potato” era.
The critter surprised an unsuspecting resident Friday by pausing to take a nap on their outdoor furniture, San Francisco Animal Care and Control (SFACC) posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
One of the SFACC employees, Officer Mullen, “encouraged this sleepy coyote on the couch to move on and find a more suitable (but less comfortable) place for the coyote to sleep,” the post said. “He listened and followed her advice.”

The San Francisco Animal Shelter shared more details about the unsuspecting homeowner and the sleepy coyote in a Facebook post Friday, written by Mullen.
“Earlier this week I was called to a residence to check on one of my favorite species of San Francisco’s urban wildlife, the coyote,” the officer wrote.
According to Mullen, the residents’ morning routine was disrupted when they woke up to “a beautiful coyote sleeping on their outdoor couch.”
“The animal reluctantly moved when the occupant approached it,” Mullen said.

Sure enough, photos shared by the shelter show the coyote snuggling up on an outdoor couch and basking in the sun. In one photo he looks like he’s sleeping, and in the other he’s woken up and looks like he’s looking at something off camera.
Thinking the creature might be sick or injured, the resident called SFACC and Mullen, who was already in the area, was dispatched to the call.
“I arrived and made contact with the resident who took me into their yard and showed me a coyote resting comfortably on a couch in their outdoor patio,” the officer wrote.

“I walked up to the coyote and started talking to him, telling him it was time to get up,” they continued. “He looked at me, stood up, stretched well and went to the edge of the yard. He was moving properly and didn’t seem sick or injured.”
According to Mullen, the resident’s home was surrounded by a “wooded area” and, after he told the coyote to go outside, the creature “jumped over the wall and made its way through the brush.”
The shelter also shared photos of coyotes coming out. In the footage, the animal has left its cozy spot in the sun and appears to be moving away from home.
“The coyote looked like a young healthy male that had probably recently been kicked out of its den and was trying to make its way through town,” Mullen noted.

In a “Notes from the Field Friday” post, SFACC also added some background on coyotes in the California city and urged anyone “concerned about a sick or injured coyote” to call its dispatch department.
“Thank you for helping us keep this population healthy and thriving in our urban jungle,” the post concluded.
