Wolfgang Van Halen Suggests David Lee Roth Insulted Him Because ‘My Dad Isn’t Here to Be a Target’

Wolfgang Van Halen has feelings about David Lee Roth’s recent disparaging comments towards him.

After Roth posted a YouTube video in January in which he ranted and mocked his former Van Halen bandmate, Wolfgang responded this week in a new interview with an Atlanta radio show Morning X.

“I am honored [Roth] he even thinks about me as much as he seems to,” said Wolfgang, 32, who played bass alongside the rocker in Van Halen after founder Michael Anthony’s exit from the band in 2006.

“You have to take what he says with a grain of salt, given that he also said he wrote ‘Eruption’ and came up with [Eddie Van Halen’s custom guitar] Frankenstein Strat,” continued Mammoth WVH frontman, son of Eddie and Valerie Bertinelli.

The radio hosts expressed surprise at the idea of Roth taking credit for Eddie’s 1978 guitar solo “Eruption,” to which Wolfgang jokingly replied, “He said he wrote all the solos that Dad wrote. I guess that’s all I can do say.”

Ultimately, Wolfgang doesn’t think Roth’s problem is all about him. “It seems like I was born into this Van Halen drama that was way before me,” he said. “And now that my dad isn’t here to be a target, I guess he’s moved on to the next best thing.”

Roth’s YouTube video, which was also shared on his Instagram account with the title “This F—in Kid,” opens with a mock interview that positions Wolfgang as Jesus Christ before ridiculing him for being favored by nepotism.

“Bro, I want people to know that I got this job because of my talent,” says the Wolfgang impersonator. “I’d still have this job, even if my dad wasn’t God. I just want people to know that I got this job because of my talent.”

Wolfgang is then mocked by Roth, who claims he didn’t pay attention to him on stage during their time together in Van Halen.

Roth claimed that the younger Van Halen kicked the woman out of two shows out of revenge, thinking she was Roth’s girlfriend, when in fact she was an accountant overseeing the tour’s payroll.
