Woman, 43, dead & girl, 17, among two fighting for their lives after triple stabbing in Manchester – as man arrested

A WOMAN, 43, has been stabbed to death while a 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being stabbed three times.

A third victim, a 64-year-old man, is also battling life-threatening injuries in hospital following the horror which happened in Manchester at around 11.20pm last night.

The police arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of murder.

Police believe the suspect is known to the victims and this is being treated as an “isolated incident.”

He is still in custody while the investigation is ongoing.

The woman (43) was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the other two victims were rushed to the hospital, where they are this morning.

A forensics tent has been set up and a heavy police presence remains in the area this morning.

The police cordon was also extended on both sides and is now about 100 meters long, MEN reports.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “At around 11.20pm last night (Sunday 18 August 2024), we were informed that three people had been stabbed in Barnard Road in the Gorton area near Longsight following a number of calls from members of the public.

“On arrival, officers, including specialist firearms units along with colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, found three people, a 17-year-old girl, a 43-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, all suffering from serious stab wounds.

“Unfortunately, a woman in her 40s sadly died from her injuries at the scene of the crash. The other two people remain in hospital receiving treatment for injuries which are believed to be life-threatening at this time.

“A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, who was taken into custody before being questioned by detectives.

“The scene remains in place as our detectives continue their investigations.

“Witnesses are being interviewed to establish the full circumstances of the incident, but initial indications suggest that the suspect was known to the victims and is being treated as an isolated incident.”

Detective Superintendent Toby Facey added: “We understand that the local community across Manchester will continue to be rightly shocked and concerned after waking up to this tragic news this morning.

“Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We do everything we can to support them.

“Within minutes of the call, our officers were on the scene and an arrest was made.

“An investigation has been launched and we are in the very early stages of our investigations. We had detectives on the ground working all night trying to get to the bottom of what happened and why.

“Local police officers will remain in the area carrying out investigations, as well as an increased number of highly visible patrols. If you have any questions, please contact them.

“We are appealing for any information; We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch. We are also interested in speaking to anyone who was in the area near Barnard Road at around 11pm and has any dash cam footage that could help us piece together what happened.

“Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 by calling 3371 of 18/08/2024 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Horrified residents have expressed their shock after a huge team of emergency services arrived at the scene last night.

“It’s shocking,” said one. “I was shaking last night. I’ve lived here for 11 years and nothing like this has ever happened.”

Another woman told the MEN she heard people “screaming”.

She said: “They were saying ‘he has a knife’, it was scary. People were staying inside, nobody wanted to come out.”

Another man claimed: “I heard the neighbors saying ‘come in, come in’.

“There was a guy with a knife chasing the girl, I said ‘leave her, it’s not worth it’.

“I turned the car towards him, but the girl was in the way. He started chasing my car with a knife.”
