A WOMAN died tragically after a large house fire on Christmas Day.
Officers and emergency services attended the scene in Carterford Drive, Norwich at around 4am this morning after reports of the fire.
Police officers unfortunately discovered the body of a woman inside the property.
Her next of kin have been notified, Norfolk police said.
The forces announced that the fire has been extinguished, but a police cordon is currently in place and will remain for some time.
The cause of the fire has not yet been clarified, and the investigation is ongoing.
Fire crews from North Earlham, Wroxham, Aylsham, Hethersett, Acle and Long Stratton all attended to tackle the blaze.
A ladder platform from Great Yarmouth was used and the urban search and rescue team from Dereham was called.
An 80-year-old man and his 67-year-old wife, who live across the street from where the fire broke out, said they were woken up by police in the early hours of the morning and at first thought they had been “burgled”.
They told the Eastern Daily Press they were very upset that something like this had happened, but praised the response from emergency services and others as “incredible”.
Simon Nicholls, 69, a retired lawyer who lives near where the fire broke out, told the news outlet it was a “terrible tragedy”.
The 92-year-old man, who lives on St Clements Hill, near where the fire broke out, said he woke up to see “flames gushing” outside, as well as flashing lights.
Police and firefighters remained at the scene at the fenced-off property throughout Boxing Day as the firefighting mission was replaced by the painstaking work of investigating the cause of the blaze.
Meanwhile, fire and rescue crews could also be seen entering the lower part of the house with rakes in an attempt to clear some of the charred debris from inside.
