Woman Drowns in Lake Havasu After ‘Improperly Secured’ Life Jacket Falls Off

A woman drowned after her “improperly attached life jacket fell off” Sunday in Lake Havasu, Arizona, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported in a Facebook news release.

Cynthia Marin, a resident of La Mesa, California, died after jumping from a boat into a lake to go swimming.

A 49-year-old woman “went into the water, [when] her improperly secured life jacket fell off,” the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said. “The victim started to panic and then went under the surface of the water.”

Around 2 p.m., a rescue and recovery dive team from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the immediate area of ​​the crash “but were unable to locate the victim.”

Along with MCSO’s rescue and recovery unit, the Careflight helicopter and scanning sonar were used. Marin’s body was found near The Islander RV Resort “in 59-degree water at a depth of 42 feet.”

Marin did not stay at The Islander RV Resort, a spokesperson for the resort confirmed to PEOPLE.

A GoFundMe page for Marina’s family has been started to raise money to bring her back to California from Arizona and for her funeral.

“On Sunday, March 10, 2024, Cynthia passed away unexpectedly in Lake Havasu, AZ,” wrote the page’s creator, Barb McAbee Grim — mother-in-law of Marin’s daughter Barbara. “She left behind 2 adult daughters, Allison and Barbara, a young son, Julian, as well as two beautiful granddaughters, Mia and Iris.”

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office representatives did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Monday.
