A WOMAN is fighting for her life after a fairground ride broke down at Lambeth Country Show yesterday.

The fairgoer, in her 40s, is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after the horror, which happened in south London at around 6.20pm.

A man in his 40s is also being treated for life-changing injuries.

Meanwhile, another man, in his 50s, and an 11-year-old girl have been released from the hospital.

Yesterday, onlookers described people “flying through the air” as if “all hell broke loose” when the lunafair went awry.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Emergency services responded at around 6.20pm on Saturday 8 June to a failed fairground ride at Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park.

“Four people were transferred to the hospital.

“After a full examination by doctors, a woman in her 40s remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“A man in his 40s is also being treated for potentially life-changing injuries.

“A man in his 50s and an 11-year-old girl have been released from the hospital.

“Officers were at the scene today along with the Health and Safety Executive as inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances.”

An eyewitness told Mail Online: “People were running towards us crying and screaming.

“I saw a lady with blood running down her face. Paramedics took her off the ride.”

Another reported: “It was horrible. The screams were terrible. Four people went flying through the air.”

They compared the chaotic scene to a “horror movie”.

One witness told MyLondon: “We witnessed this. I still can’t understand what went wrong I just hope those injured are OK.”

“I was there when it happened and I helped some people out of the ride, I hope the four are ok,” another added.

Earlier today, Lambeth Council announced that the incident was being investigated by the Met Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

Three police cars could be seen entering the park, where safety checks are being carried out on other rides, to make inquiries shortly before 11am.

Lambeth Country Show reopened at 1pm but the fairground rides will remain closed for the second day.

Helen Hayes, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood, posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday night: “Shocked to learn of the failure of the fairground ride at Lambeth Country Show earlier this evening.

“My thoughts are with the injured and all who witnessed this terrible event.

“Thank you to the emergency services that came.

“There must now be an immediate investigation.”

Organized by the council, the show has been a long-awaited traditional free community event since 1974.

It attracts more than 120,000 people annually during the weekend.
