Woman killed in horror Christmas Day crash with man arrested for ‘dangerous driving’ – as major road is forced to close

A WOMAN has died in a horror Christmas crash as police arrested a man for “dangerous driving”.

The tragedy happened on the A1, near Darlington, between Junctions 57 and 58, just after 8.30pm.

A white Ford Fiesta and a black Volkswagen Tiguan were involved in the fatal crash, police said.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed that a woman in her 80s, who was a passenger in a Ford Fiesta, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services also took the driver, a man in his 80s, to the hospital.

He is now in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a man in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was released pending investigation.

The motorway was closed until around 8am today for collision investigation teams and the National Highways Agency.

It has now reopened in both directions, but the lane remains closed.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police added: “We would like to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to us and has dashcam footage or information about the incident, including anyone who witnessed the crash or saw any of the vehicles before the collision.
