Woman Sues Dentist After Receiving 4 Root Canals, 8 Crowns and 20 Fillings in a Single Visit

A Minnesota woman has filed a malpractice lawsuit against her dentist, claiming she was in pain and disfigured after undergoing multiple dental procedures, according to a court filing obtained by PEOPLE.

On Dec. 21, Kathleen Wilson filed a lawsuit in Hennepin County Circuit Court alleging that Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Eden Prairie, Minn. provided negligent treatment during visit in July 2020.

Wilson claimed Molldrem performed 32 procedures on 28 teeth during one visit, including four root canals, eight dental crowns and 20 fillings.

In the lawsuit, Wilson says she suffered “significant injuries” during the procedure and continues to suffer “pain and suffering, embarrassment, emotional distress and disfigurement as a direct result of Dr. Molldrem’s negligence.” She is seeking at least $50,000 in damages. Molldrem has not yet filed a response in court and did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on the allegations.

Wilson’s complaint states that her attorney has retained Dr. Avrum Goldstein DMD FRCD(C) as an expert witness to assist him in the case. Goldstein, who currently teaches at the Touro School of Dentistry, reviewed Wilson’s dental records and submitted his findings, which Weimer submitted to the court.

In his report, Goldstein agreed with Molldrem’s diagnosis that “almost every one of Wilson’s teeth” was rotten. Goldstein believed that Molldrema’s attempt “to fill every hole in every tooth in his mouth in one visit” was not “humanely achievable” and that repairing 28 teeth in one visit was “impossible to achieve if … done correctly”.

Goldstein also stated that the amount of anesthesia Molldrem administered to Wilson “drastically exceeded what would be considered safe.” Goldstein advised that the maximum dose of anesthesia he would administer would be 490 mg; Molldrem gave Wilson nearly double the amount — 960 mg — according to her records, according to Goldstein. He also claimed that Molldrem falsified records of how much anesthesia he gave her, and that Wilson was “lucky” not to have experienced any side effects.

Goldstein concluded that if Wilson’s teeth were to be removed and replaced with implants, then “all the work that was done and all the costs associated with it would be wasted.”

Molldrem has been a dentist for more than 20 years, according to the Molldrem Family Dentistry website.

Weimer and Goldstein also did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday.
