A World on Fire returns to our screens for its second season, and while fans are loving the series’ return, keen-eyed history buffs have spotted some glaring flaws in the new TV series – but can you spot them? Learn more here…
Posting on Twitter, one person wrote: “Really trying to give a chance for a second #WorldOnFire series. But in the two episodes so far, we’ve seen Willy’s Jeep in the desert and a Dodge WC54 in Paris late 1940 – neither of which are in production for another two years.” Another added: “#WorldOnFire or ‘Oh what a fun fight!’ … Things that do NOT happen: have a dog, everyone has electricity and worse, leave the lights on continuously during the day (We didn’t have electricity until the early 60’s), send a roast dinner, eat sweets, don’t wear a respirator!

Another joked: “Watching the new series of #WorldOnFire and since it presents great drama, I can’t help but wonder who would have thought that the RAF pilots were wearing chopped General Service respirators as oxygen masks.”

Despite the historical inaccuracies, viewers have been very vocal about the second installment of the series, which finally arrives on iPlayer after a three-year hiatus since the first, partly due to the global pandemic.
The show’s creator, Peter Bowker, who opened the second season, told the BBC: “As always, we tell stories with a contemporary twist that aren’t forced and aren’t always pleasant, stories that showcase both resilience and human folly and stories of ordinary life in extraordinary times. Historical dramas shouldn’t be about nostalgia like this and I hope it doesn’t give me hope.

“It’s about questioning the present by questioning the stories of our past. And at the heart of those stories, amid many perspectives, the only question remains – “If you were there, what would you do?”

Much of the original cast has returned for the second season, with the significant absences of Helen Hunt, Sean Bean, and Arthur Darvill. However, The Little Mermaid star Jonah Hauer-King is among those returning as Harry.

“Movies and TV series are an incredible platform to tell human stories and honor those who have sacrificed so much,” he explains of the program. “Those brave people won’t last forever, but the trauma lives on. Series like The World on Fire are a great way for younger audiences to interact with this period of history and bring together stories from around the world, from India, France, Germany, Poland. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

This isn’t the only World War II drama Jonah has starred in recently, as he’ll also be starring in the film adaptation of The Tattooist of Auschwitz as Lala Sokolov. The true story of Lale, a Jewish prisoner who got a job tattooing identification numbers on the hands of prisoners in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War II.
