Stefan Schauffele and Ping Yi, his mother, gave birth to him. He was born to parents of mixed descent. His father is a naturalized German/French immigrant, while his mother is a naturalized Taiwanese immigrant who grew up in Japan. Nicolas Schauffele is his brother.

Xander graduated from Scripps Ranch High School. He won the 2011 California State High School Championship. He was named the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year. Xander was also named to the All-Big West First Team in 2012. He defeated Beau Hossler at the 2014 California State Amateur Championship. Xander was defeated by Hossler in the 2014 Amateur West After high school, he went to California State University in Long Beach.

He transferred to San Diego State University for his sophomore year. In 50 tournaments, he compiled a collegiate record that includes three wins, four runner-up finishes, 19 top-five finishes and 27 top-ten finishes.
