The men made it a suicide by shooting John, placing a bottle of oxycodone next to his body and leaving the gun in John’s hand.
The audience learned that Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) was responsible for hiring hitmen to kill John, and after arguing with Jamie (Wes Bentley) in last week’s episode, she drove off and was shot in the head.
The series begins in episode 12 when Kayce and his sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) learn that their adopted brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) is under investigation after detectives arrive at Jamie’s house inquiring about Sarah’s death.
As Kayce and Beth try to stop their brother from talking to the authorities and later uncovering their father’s secrets, another death occurs at the ranch.
Just hours after confessing his love to Teeter, ranch hand Colby (Denim Richards) comes to the aid of Carter, a teenager who has taken in the Dutton ranch, when Carter is captured and cornered in the barn by a troubled horse. As Colby allows Carter to escape, the horse kicks Colby squarely in the chest, killing him. Carter shoots the horse, but there is no escape for Colby.

At the end of the episode, the drama returns to John’s death as Kayce packs up and leaves for the night to do “what’s best for the ranch.”
After discovering the identity of the individual linked to the shadowy organization that staged John’s suicide through an old military contact, Kayce tracks the killer down to his daughter’s soccer game.
As the man and his daughter intend to drive off after the game, Kayce jumps into their car and holds the daughter at gunpoint, demanding that the man drive. He threatens the killer by saying that he knows where his family works and lives and hits him on the head with a gun while telling the girl in a threatening voice, “You should be crying.”
Kayce threatens to kill them both if they look back as he jumps out of their car.
There are two more episodes of the hit series that ends after 5 seasons. Fans have waited nearly two years since the midseason finale for the Duttons to return to screens. But this summer they learned that Costner would not be continuing his role.

“Him not coming back felt like, ‘Okay, now we’re really going to have to land this plane,’” Grimes told PEOPLE of Costner’s departure. “I think the departure of the patriarch will always be part of the story. That was always where it was going, what do these kids do? What does this family do when their rock is gone?”
Although he acknowledges the “drama” that preceded it Yellowstonereturn to filming — including scheduling conflicts between the Costners Horizon: An American Saga and Yellowstone that led to the Oscar winner dropping out of his role on the show in June — Grimes adding that he felt like “it was always going to be that way.”
“Whatever the circumstances, [it] it definitely felt like, ‘Okay, we’re coming in to land,'” he says of Costner’s absence. “It definitely felt different.”
