News from Yevgeny Prigozhin
One of the key players in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine is Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Russian private military company Wagner Group. He is seen as a potential challenger to Russian President Vladimir Putin due to his unusually harsh criticism of the military high command. But is he really as powerful as he seems?
On June 24, Prigozhin ordered his troops to advance on Moscow and called for an armed uprising to overthrow the Russian military authorities. An essential command and logistics center for the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia has been taken over by Wagner fighters.
As a result, the Russian army rushed to protect the Russian capital, and Putin threatened severe consequences for Prigozhin’s “betrayal” and “betrayal”. Hours later, however, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Prigozhin had accepted a deal to travel to Belarus, which supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On the battlefield, Wagner’s group is known for its brutality and savagery. Videos of alleged killings of his fighters who had defected to Ukraine also showed his ruthlessness off the battlefield. After allegedly using a sledgehammer to kill a member who had betrayed his ranks the previous year, Wagner adopted the weapon as his emblem.
“Prigozhin offers various pretentious cruelties. Whatever it is, a play, a trolling or an impressive performance, it is still part of the marketing efforts that support the cult of violence, according to an article by the principal investigator of the Carnegie Endowment, Andrei Kolesnikov, in the unofficial publication Prigozhin, who was born in 1961 in what is now St. Petersburg but was then known as Leningrad, spent his 20s serving a nine-year sentence for robbery and fraud in a Soviet prison.
After his release from prison and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Prigozhin started his own business. He started with a hot dog cart in his hometown before moving on to larger ventures such as a fancy restaurant that attracted Russia’s elite, including then-deputy mayor Vladimir Putin.
After Putin was elected president, Prigozhin’s company continued to grow as he benefited from his strong ties to the political elite. His Concord catering business, founded in the 1990s, has won exclusive and lucrative government contracts for state dinners such as Putin’s inauguration and US President George W. Bush’s trip to St. Petersburg. Due to the contract, Prigozhin was nicknamed “Putin’s cook.” Prigožin, however, had goals beyond the restaurant business.
