Yogi Adityanath is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is the chief priest of the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur. He is the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini; a youth organization embroiled in controversy for its involvement in communal violence. Yogi Adityanath is known as a Hindu right-wing populist.

Yogi Adityanath was born on Monday, June 5, 1972, in Panchur, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand (age 51; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Gemini. He received his primary education from local schools in Pauri and Rishikesh. He continued his studies at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Uttarakhand, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1992.

He left his hometown in the mid-1990s and joined the Ayodhya Ram Mandir Movement. There he met Mahant Avaidyanath, the former Mahant (chief priest) of Goraknath Math, whom he respected and was inspired by. Mahant Avaidyanath once met Adityanath’s father and told him that he had three more sons and was kind enough to make Adityanath his disciple; his father happily agreed. Adityanath severed ties with his family in 1993 and went to Gorakhpur to become Mahant’s disciple and eventually became his favorite disciple.

He took Diksha (initiation) in 1994 when Mahant Avaidyanath appointed him as his successor and chief priest of Gorakhnath Math. As he was appointed as the successor of Gorakhnath Math, one of his responsibilities was to manage the many schools, colleges and hospitals run by the Gorakhnath Trust.

Yogi Adityanath belonged to the Kshatriya family. His parents named him Ajay and his real name is Ajay Mohan Bisht. After attaining Diksha, he was given the name “Yogi Adityanath”. His father Anand Singh Bisht, a forest ranger, passed away on April 20, 2020, at AIIMS, New Delhi due to chronic illness. His mother Savitri Devi was a housewife. He is the second eldest child in his family, with four brothers and three sisters. His sister Shashi (the eldest of three sisters) runs a tea shop in Uttarakhand. She said she was happy in the mountains and didn’t want to move.

Profession
He first entered politics in 1996 when he managed Mahant Avaidyanath’s campaign. In 1998, when Mahant Avaidyanath retired, he appointed Adityanath as his nominee for the Gorakhpur seat. Yogi contested and won the Lok Sabha elections from Gorakhpur. At the age of 26, he was the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha. After winning the first election, he founded his own youth organization, Hindu Yuva Vahini, which was controversial and established Yogi Adityanath Right wing image. Wing populist Hindu demagogue.

Thereafter, Yogi won five consecutive Lok Sabha elections from 1998 to 2014. As a Member of Parliament, he was included as a member of several committees over the years such as the Food Committee, the Civil Supplies Committee, the Sugar and Edible Oils Committee, the Home Office Advisory Committee, the Transport, Tourism and Culture Committee, the External Affairs Committee, and others.
In 2017, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections with a landslide victory. Yogi Adityanath was announced as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on March 18, 2017. He was sworn in the next day on March 19, 2017.

In March 2022, he won the Gorakhpur constituency in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections; his winning margin was more than 73,000 votes. On March 25, 2022, he became the first person to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for a second consecutive term after completing his five-year term in the state; the swearing-in ceremony was held at Atal Bihari Vaj, Lucknow Held at Pai Ekana Stadium.

- In 2005, he led a religious conversion campaign; during this period, he converted a number of people of different religions to Hinduism. In one such purification event, he reportedly converted 1,800 Muslims to Hinduism in Etah, Uttar Pradesh.
- In 2007, a Hindu child was killed in Hindu-Muslim clashes during Muharram. After the riots, Yogi Adityanath visited the site where the child died and made hateful remarks. After the speech, police arrested Yogi and some of his followers. This triggered violence across Gorakhpur. Yogi was released two weeks later, but 10 people died during this period. He said——
If they (Muslims) kill one of our Hindu brothers, we will kill 10 of them. If they can burn down our houses and shops, then what’s stopping us from doing the same”
- In 2015, International Yoga Day was launched and he made it mandatory to participate. Some people and minorities in India say they will participate in yoga day but will not perform sun salutations; as it goes against their religious sentiments. Yogi Adityanath responded:
People who are against “Surya Namaskar” should throw themselves into the sea. Lord Shankar is the greatest yogi who started yoga, those who want to avoid yoga and Lord Shankar can leave Hindustan”
- In 2015, when Shah Rukh Khan made a statement on the issue of intolerance in India, Yogi made a statement in Parliament comparing him to Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed. He said——
There is no difference in the language of Shah Rukh Khan and Hafiz Saeed. There is a conspiracy going on in India to poison the atmosphere of the country and Shah Rukh Khan has become a part of it. “

- On April 15, 2019, the Election Commission of India (ECI) imposed a 72-hour ban on Yogi Adityanath from campaigning. for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC); just days before the ban, he had been warned by the ECI for making remarks about the Indian Army. Adityanath was unable to attend his father’s funeral on April 21, 2020, as he wanted to ensure that the coronavirus-induced lockdown was enforced.
