Yogi Adityanath

Yogi Adityanath is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is the chief priest of the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur. He is the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini; a youth organization embroiled in controversy for its involvement in communal violence. Yogi Adityanath is known as a Hindu right-wing populist.

Yogi Adityanath was born on Monday, June 5, 1972, in Panchur, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand (age 51; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Gemini. He received his primary education from local schools in Pauri and Rishikesh. He continued his studies at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Uttarakhand, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1992.

He left his hometown in the mid-1990s and joined the Ayodhya Ram Mandir Movement. There he met Mahant Avaidyanath, the former Mahant (chief priest) of Goraknath Math, whom he respected and was inspired by. Mahant Avaidyanath once met Adityanath’s father and told him that he had three more sons and was kind enough to make Adityanath his disciple; his father happily agreed. Adityanath severed ties with his family in 1993 and went to Gorakhpur to become Mahant’s disciple and eventually became his favorite disciple.

He took Diksha (initiation) in 1994 when Mahant Avaidyanath appointed him as his successor and chief priest of Gorakhnath Math. As he was appointed as the successor of Gorakhnath Math, one of his responsibilities was to manage the many schools, colleges and hospitals run by the Gorakhnath Trust.

Yogi Adityanath belonged to the Kshatriya family. His parents named him Ajay and his real name is Ajay Mohan Bisht. After attaining Diksha, he was given the name “Yogi Adityanath”. His father Anand Singh Bisht, a forest ranger, passed away on April 20, 2020, at AIIMS, New Delhi due to chronic illness. His mother Savitri Devi was a housewife. He is the second eldest child in his family, with four brothers and three sisters. His sister Shashi (the eldest of three sisters) runs a tea shop in Uttarakhand. He first entered politics in 1996 when he managed Mahant Avaidyanath’s campaign. In 1998, when Mahant Avaidyanath retired, he appointed Adityanath as his nominee for the Gorakhpur seat.
