In this confusing optical illusion, we challenge you to try and figure out which “g” is spelled correctly.

And that can be harder than you think.

A group of psychologists at Johns Hopkins University discovered that most people don’t know that there are two types of lowercase “g.”

One of them is the open tail “g” that many wear every day, and it appears as a circle with a hook dangling from it.

But the other is a more refined version, appearing in some books and newspapers, as well as serif fonts like Times New Roman and Calibri.

We’ve all seen both typefaces, but can you now identify the correct version when faced with four variants?

In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception & Performance, 38 volunteers were asked to list the letters they thought had two typefaces.

In the first experiment, “most of the participants did not remember the existence of looptail g,” said co-author Gali Ellenblum, while only two people were able to spell looptail g correctly.

The volunteers were then asked to find examples of the “g” tail in the text and were asked to recreate the letter.

In the end, only one person was able to successfully complete the task.

Finally, those who participated in the study were asked to identify the letter “g” in a multiple-choice test with four variants of the letter, but only seven out of 25 managed to do it correctly.

So don’t worry if you have problems, because it turns out that many of us know that letter, but we can’t always recognize it.

Explaining this puzzling discovery, Michael McCloskey, lead author of the paper, said: “What we think is happening here is that we learn the shapes of most letters in part because we have to write them in school.

“‘Looptail g’ is something we never learned to write, so we may never learn its shape.”

So, have you already managed to detect the correct version of the letter?

Fear not if you still haven’t been successful, because we have a solution below.
