Thoppi was arrested by the Kerala Police on the basis of two complaints lodged against him. The complaints alleged the use of offensive language, the dissemination of explicit content and causing disruption in traffic. Thoppi’s arrest ignited a significant and contentious debate in Kerala, resulting in sharply divided public opinion.

However, what has caused even more concern is the level of adoration it receives from children, some of whom are as young as ten years old. During his presence at the inauguration of a men’s fashion store in Valanchery, he entertained his young fans by performing a song that contained repeated use of the Malayalam equivalent of the term ‘fart’.

Why was Thoppi arrested?

Thoppi was arrested in connection with a complaint filed by social worker Saifuddin Padath and Murshidul Haq, leader of the All India Youth Federation, at the Valanchery police station. Charges against him included causing a traffic obstruction and using offensive language in public.

When police tried to arrest him, Thoppi resisted, necessitating forced entry into his apartment. Namely, during the incident, he broadcast the events live on his YouTube channel called “Mrz Thoppi”.

Police have registered a case against Thoppi under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those related to causing traffic obstruction and using abusive language in public.

“He persistently refused to open the door, even after a long time had passed. Therefore, we had no choice but to forcefully break down the door and take him into custody,” the police official said. Authorities have expressed concern that the YouTuber could tamper with or destroy potential evidence stored on his phone and laptop if given more time.

During the incident, a large crowd gathered, mostly young people and teenagers. According to the police, the YouTuber was accused of using explicit language during the performance of songs and making objectionable remarks during the program.

Mr. Thoppi has been charged with several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 283 (causing obstruction in a public place) and 294 (b) (uttering or singing an obscene song), as well as section 67 of the Information Technology Act (IT Act). The police officer confirmed that these reports were filed against the YouTuber.

Besides, based on the First Information Report (FIR), the owner of the shop where the incident took place has also been registered in the same departments under the IPC. The YouTuber will be brought to court soon for further proceedings, the official said.
