In 1992, he was posted to Assam as a trained IPS officer. His appointment comes at a time when militancy in the Northeast is at its peak. After promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), he was posted to Sonitpur. Thereafter, he was posted to Rangiya where he served as Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). He was later posted to Nalbari where he played an important role in curbing militant activities as an Additional Superintendent of Police. Thereafter he was sent to Jorat. There, under his leadership, the Assam Police successfully conducted counter-insurgency operations without the assistance of the Indian Army. After being promoted to Superintendent of Police (SP), Singh was posted to Guwahati and then to Barpeta. In 2002, he was posted to New Delhi to serve in the Special Protection Group (SPG). There, he looked after the protection details of Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh.

After his tenure with the SPG, Singh returned to Assam and was appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG). He was later promoted as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Guwahati. In Guwahati, he played a key role in dismantling the terror network of banned organizations ULFA and NDFB. In 2010, he was posted to Sonitpur district as Inspector General (IG) of Tezpur in North Assam to curb post-genocide unrest in the area. Singh was recalled to Guwahati in June 2011 after violence broke out in Dispur. That same year, he was assigned to the United Nations Mission in Africa. In 2012, after conflicts broke out in the Bodoland region, he was sent to the Bodoland region as the Inspector General of Police. In November 2013, he was posted to New Delhi as Inspector General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). During his tenure in the NIA, he was responsible for investigations in Northeast, Kashmir and Punjab. He oversaw investigations into terrorist activities linked to the Islamic State in India and globally. He also oversaw the investigation of major incidents such as the Samjauta, Malegaon, Ajmer Sharif and Makkah mosque bombings. Additionally, he oversaw the investigation into attacks on Indian military personnel in Pulwama, Uri and Pathankot. He played a key role in the NIA’s efforts to expose separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir for sponsoring terrorism.

His tenure in the NIA was cut short after he was recalled to Guwahati as civilian unrest intensified during the Citizenship Amendment Act (Act) 2019 protests. He also served as the state nodal officer responsible for managing the movement of people between states during the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting nationwide lockdown. He was responsible for the safe repatriation of hundreds of thousands of people stranded at various locations in India and abroad. He was appointed as the Special DGP for Law and Order in December 2019.

In August 2020, he was appointed as Director, Assam Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB); he remained in office till January 2023. In 2021, he was appointed as the head of the Assam Anti-Rhino Poaching Task Force. He took office as the Inspector General of Police of Assam on February 1, 2023. In August 2023, he was selected as the Deputy Director General of the Central Delegation by the federal government.

- Gyanendra’s daughter Aishwarya Singh decided to give up training with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and join the SVPNPA in 2021. In February 2023, when Aishwarya Singh was participating in a parade from SVPNPA, a video of her and Gyanendra paying tribute to each other went viral. Later, Gyanendra posted a tweet expressing his immense pride in Aishwarya’s achievement.

- In July 2023, the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) threatened Deputy Inspector General of Police GP Singh that he would face consequences if he did not stop police-cop clashes. ULFA also claimed that the Assam police under Singh was involved in killing innocent people who had nothing to do with the extremists. ULFA wrote in its ultimatum:
DGP Gyanendra Pratap (GP) Singh has repeatedly shown bravery by pretending to be an innocent person. Such incidents should stop immediately. This is our final warning. “
- He has been involved in several UNDP initiatives focused on strengthening the structure and management of India’s law enforcement system. He has also traveled to the UK and worked with different police units there, including the National Police Training Facility at Bramshill. This collaboration resulted in the establishment of Community Liaison Groups and Nagrik Samitis in Jorhat and Guwahati. These groups aim to promote better cooperation and interaction between police and the public.
