Zac Efron’s Family: All About His Parents and Siblings

Zac Efron may be the Hollywood star in his family, but his siblings have gained some fans too.

Zac grew up in Arroyo Grande, California, where his parents, Starla Baskett and David Efron, worked at the same power plant. Zac’s parents are quite private, and The greatest showman the actor is not that open about his family life, but he has shared his love for his mom and dad over the years in interviews and on social media.

“My parents love me in very different ways,” Zac said Ella 2016. “But they checked every box. My dad always taught me to be active. I was always the shortest kid in school. Always the worst kid on the team. I would come home after practice and my dad would make a basketball hoop. Then we would go out and shoot 100 free throws. Pretty soon every time I got fouled I would make my free throws.”

On the other hand, Zac’s relationship with brother Dylan Efron is something he has been more public about. Dylan is four years younger than Zac, and the two have a very close relationship that includes working together.

Besides Dylan, Zac has two other siblings from his father’s second marriage. Zac has been posting about his much younger siblings Olivia and Henry on social media – and he and Dylan even have a bit of a rivalry over who Olivia likes best.

Zac’s parents met while working at the same power plant: Starla worked in administration, and David was an engineer.

In an interview for The 2010 Los Angeles TimesZac explained that his upbringing was far from the celebrity world he would later join.

“We wouldn’t watch TV during dinner. We did not have Extra gaming or anything like that,” he said.

Starla and David are no longer together. In 2016, reports surfaced that they were divorcing and David later remarried.

Although Zac and Dylan’s parents are not as public as their sons, fans can still see them on social media.

In 2017, he shared a photo of himself, Starla and The greatest showman costar Hugh Jackman to celebrate his mother’s birthday. “Happy birthday to my mom, my best little girl,” Zac wrote. “I love you more than the sun, the moon and all the stars in the galaxy. Love, your chocolate bear.”

In May 2020, he shared another photo of them, and in the caption he wrote: “I love you mom.”

As for his dad, for Father’s Day 2019, Zac posted a photo of David carrying him on his back when he was a baby.

“I’m in the back helping dad build our house,” he captioned the video. “Honestly – from scratch – he’s that kind of guy. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I love you.”

Zac and his brother Dylan are very close

Zac and Dylan often post about each other’s social media activities, including boating and golfing together.

In an interview with BroBible in 2021, Dylan said that he and Zac were “always fighting each other” when they were kids and described them as “so different”.

“[T]”After I graduated from college, Zac really took me in and let me live with him when I got my first job in Los Angeles,” Dylan said. “He really became that older brother and then, I would say, we became closer than ever. Our relationship was something that developed more as we both became adults and stopped fighting so much.”

Dylan is passionate about travel and nature

Dylan is a YouTuber and social media influencer who focuses on travel and outdoor adventures. He has over 842,000 followers on Instagram.

“From a young age, my passions have always been fitness and being outside,” Dylan told BroBible. “Not necessarily exercise, but just exhausting yourself in anything. We did that for fun growing up. We didn’t have Six Flags or any big concerts to go to in my hometown, it was all about using what was available to us, which was the oceans or the mountains.”

Dylan was the producer of Zac’s documentaries

Before making his own career in front of the camera, Dylan worked as a producer, including Zac’s documentary series Down to Earth with Zac Efronwhich ran for two seasons starting in 2020. He also appeared in several episodes Down to Earth along with his older brother, and was an associate producer of the 2020 documentary By hand.

It wasn’t the only time that Zac and Dylan recorded a joint project. In 2019, they released a video series on YouTube called “Off the Grid” that showed them skiing and spending time in the desert, among other adventures.

Zac has two younger half-siblings

Zac sometimes posts on social media about his younger half-siblings, Olivia and Henry.

In June 2023, he shared a photo on Instagram of himself holding Olivia and Henry at the circus. He also announced their date on his Instagram Story, showing that David had joined them at the event.

Previously, in December 2022, Zac shared a photo on Instagram of himself holding Olivia for her birthday, with the caption, “Happy birthday little sister.”

Dylan says that Olivia likes him more than Zac

Dylan and Zac have a friendly rivalry over who Olivia prefers. In August 2023, Dylan released a video montage of Olivia talking about how much she loved him. Her reasons included Dylan being “strong enough to pick me up” and being able to hold her upside down.

Dylan wrote in the caption: “Sorry Zac, I win ❤️.”

Zac’s family is very supportive of his acting career

In December 2023, Zac was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A number of people turned up to celebrate with the actor, including his parents and younger brother Dylan.

“I really want to take this moment to thank my first fans, thank you to my family,” Zac said during his speech. “Thank you mom, thank you dad, and thank you Dylan. There have been a lot of sacrifices you’ve made for me throughout my life and it couldn’t have been easy, but thank you for believing in me. You’re the reason I’m here today.”
