When Link first arrives in Kakariko Village in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, players may notice the ancient Sheikah artifact that Paya cares for in Impa’s home. While this artifact doesn’t seem to have much use to the player at first, it plays a crucial role in “The Stolen Heirloom” shrine quest, as it happens to be the heirloom that gets stolen. In order to unlock this shrine quest, players must first complete three other side quests in the village, making “The Stolen Heirloom Shrine” an easy shrine quest to miss.
In order to set the events of “The Stolen Heirloom” in motion in BOTW, players must first find Kakariko Village’s Fairy Fountain for the painter Pikango, return all of Cado’s Cuccos to their coop, and catch fireflies for Lasli. At that point, Paya’s precious artifact will have been stolen by the next morning, and players will finally be able to pick up this shrine quest and unlock the Lanka Rokee Shrine. Fortunately, since this shrine quest requires quite a bit of legwork to complete, the game doesn’t offer Link any additional trials when he finally gets there, allowing him to simply walk up to the monk and claim his prize.
Not only is “The Stolen Heirloom” one of the most well-hidden shrine quests in Breath of the Wild with all of its prerequisite side quests, but it’s also one of the trickiest to complete once it has been obtained. The requirements for this quest are a bit convoluted and require several cutscenes and dialogue triggers to complete, and it can take several attempts if players aren’t careful. However, this Shrine not only rewards players with a blessing and a treasure, but the completion of this quest unlocks a bit of backstory about Kakariko Village and its residents as well.
How To Unlock The Stolen Heirloom Shrine Quest In BOTW
The first quest players must complete to unlock “The Stolen Heirloom” shrine quest in Breath of the Wild is Find the Fairy Fountain, which is one of the main story quests found in Kakariko Village. The painter near the Goddess Statue, Pikango, will give Link this quest when he speaks to him for the first time, and he’ll lead Link most of the way to the Fountain. However, he’ll only go as far as the Tal’oh Naeg Shrine before he gets too tired to go on, so Link will have to follow the rest of the path alone. The Fairy Fountain is at the end of the path to the left through the woods, and, once Link pays 100 Rupees to free the Fairy, this Fountain will unlock, allowing Link to snap a picture for Pikango with the Sheikah Slate’s Camera rune to complete the quest.
After returning to Kakariko Village, players can speak with Cado, one of the guards outside of Impa’s house. However, after noon, Cado will return to his own home across from the village clothes shop, Enchanted, and realize that most of his precious Cuccos have escaped their coop. He’ll give Link the “Flown the Coop” side quest, asking him to find and return the seven Cuccos. The Cuccos don’t move too far from their set locations, however, making them easy to catch and toss back into the coop. The Cuccos can be found in the following spots:
- On the hill near the Tal’oh Naeg Shrine
- On the roof of Enchanted
- In the plum garden behind Enchanted
- Near the fire pit by the Goddess Statue
- Under an overhang on the south side of the village
- On top of an overhang east of the village entrance
- In front of the shed across the bridge on the east side of town
Once they’re all returned, Cado will give Link 50 Rupees.
The final BOTW side quest players have to complete to access “The Stolen Heirloom” is “By Firefly’s Light,” which players can get by speaking to Lasli at her house at night. During the day, Lasli works at Enchanted, so players will have to complete this quest between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. before she leaves for work. She lives in the house over the bridge to the left of the entrance to Kakariko Village, and she’ll ask Link to bring her five Sunset Fireflies. If players don’t already have five fireflies in their inventory, they can usually find some just outside her house. To complete the quest, Link has to hold and release the fireflies in her house, and she’ll reward him with 50 Rupees.
How To Find The Lanka Rokee Shrine In BOTW
Once these three side quests have been completed, the guards outside Impa’s house will be on high alert the next time Link sees them. After speaking with them, players will discover that the ancient Sheikah artifact has been stolen, allowing them to go inside and finally get “The Stolen Heirloom” shrine quest from Paya. They’ll have to have several conversations with her and put her to bed before heading back outside to wait for nightfall. The time can be passed by sitting at the fire, or players can simply wait for it to be 10 p.m., at which point the guard Dorian will leave his post and head towards the path to the Fairy Fountain.
Link will have to follow Dorian without being noticed, so it’s a good idea to keep distance from the guard and bring some stealth-boosting food, elixirs, or armor like the Sheikah Set to complete this part of the quest. If Link is spotted, he’ll have to try again the next night. Dorian will take the right fork in the path instead of heading toward the Fairy Fountain, and, after crossing a small bridge, he will arrive at an orange Shrine platform in the woods.
It’s best to wait on the other side of the bridge until he makes it the entire way across since Dorian will easily spot Link if they’re both on the bridge at the same time. Once Link crosses the bridge, a cutscene will start, and a Yiga Jerk will appear to confront Dorian. However, the Yiga Jerk will quickly notice Link, and the player will have to defeat him in order to speak with Dorian and complete the shrine quest.
Once the heirloom has been placed on the Shrine platform, the Lanka Rokee Shrine will emerge from the ground, and players can enter and collect the Spirit Orb from the monk. There’s also an Edge of Duality sword that players can pick up from this Shrine’s treasure chest. At this point, Link can return to Kakariko Village and let Paya know that all is well, but this part is technically optional since the BOTW shrine quest has already been completed.
