Zendaya Channels Cher in 2001 Bob Mackie Couture Dress at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Zendaya pays tribute to Cher — and Bob Mackie’s iconic 2001 collection.

On Saturday, October 19 at Dune actress, 28, hit the red carpet in style for the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which was held at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio.

But Zendaya didn’t just step out in a designer look. According to the actress’ longtime stylist and collaborator, Law Roach, her bare-skinned ensemble — featuring a white satin coat and shimmering gold beaded bodysuit — was vintage, culled from Bob Mackie’s fall 2001 collection.

“Fall 2001 Bob Mackie Couture Collection, Foreign Intrigue,” Roach, 46, wrote on his Instagram Stories, describing Zendaya’s look for the evening. “White silk satin raincoat, with dramatic collar and cuffs, embroidered with gold and diamond beading and rhinestones.”

“Nude Illusion Halter Dress, completely hand-embellished with gold, diamond and iridescent trumpet and aurora borealis beading [sic] stones,” he continued.

Bob Mackie’s choice of look feels like a tribute to Cher, as the “Believe” singer wore the designer’s look decades after Mackie was first chosen to dress her in 1967 when she appeared on The Carol Burnett Show. Cher is among the music stars inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year.

Her colleagues include Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.

The late Alexis Korner, John Mayall and the late Big Mama Thornton will receive the Musical Influence Award, while the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and the late Norman Whitfield will receive the Musical Excellence Award. Suzanne de Passe will be presented with the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

Challengers star Zendaya and her stylist Roach have long collaborated on their irresistible red carpet looks. One of the most notable combinations of this couple came in February of this year when Zendaya stepped out at the premiere of the film Dina: The second part wearing an archival Mugler robot suit.

The vintage couture design, which first debuted on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week in 1995, was made from a silver material that looked like robotic armor, and featured PVC-covered cutouts, including the breasts and cheeks on the butt.

Talking to Vogue on how she and Roach came up with the idea for the look, the actress revealed that her stylist warned her at the last minute to “go crazy.”

Dua Lipa, Jelly Roll, Demi Lovato and more will appear in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.

“He said, ‘Are you serious? Don’t play with me! Don’t make me start something and make me do it and you’re going to freak out at the last minute and you’re going to be too scared to wear it,'” Zendaya recalled during of his appearance on Vogue“Life in appearance” series.

The outfit was ultimately successful, and one of the men who made the suit in the 1990s even attended a fitting and said the armor “fit like a glove.” The whole look felt “meant,” Zendaya told the outlet. .

Roach was also candid about his collaboration with the former Disney star. In the May interview with Cutting room floorRoach credits Zendaya with helping him find his voice early in his own career.

“She was always the one who advocated for me and made sure I was in these rooms where people thought I didn’t belong. Even as a young girl, I’m talking about 16, 17 years old,” he said at the time.

He continued: “We’d sit in boardrooms with clients and companies and CEOs and they’d try to make me invisible and she’d say, ‘Right has something to say’ or someone [would] he tries to talk around me and she’s like, ‘Oh, well he just asked you,’ and it was like those little, little things that always when someone tried to take over, she’d bring it back to me. ”

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on October 19 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT and will be available to stream on Disney+ immediately following the broadcast.
