Zendaya’s Stylist Calls Out Designers Who Refused to Dress Her Back in the Day: ‘I Still Have All the Receipts'

Zendaya and fashion may have become synonymous over the years, but according to her stylist, she wasn’t always the go-to girl for big brands looking to showcase their designs.

In an interview with Cutting room floor shared on Patreon On Thursday, May 9, the actress’ longtime collaborator, Law Roach, said the challenge was getting certain luxury fashion houses to work with Challengers star, 27.

“I would write the big five. I would write Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, Dior, and they would all say ‘No, try again next year. It’s too green,’ 45-year-old Roach said during the interview.

The episode was recorded on April 22 — two weeks before Dune star walked the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala, where she also co-chaired the event.

For “Sleeping Beauties: The Reawakening of Fashion,” Zendaya wore a John Galliano gown from Maison Margiela.

According to Roach, he retained “all the accounts” from the “big five” that had previously rejected his client.

“By the time she got to American Vogueshe still hasn’t worn any of those designers — she still hasn’t,” he said.

The host seemed surprised by his confession, so Roach explained a little more.

“In the editorial, yes. But on the red carpet, she still has never worn Dior on the carpet. She still hasn’t worn Chanel on the carpet. She still hasn’t worn Gucci on the carpet. Any press, any appearance, never,” Roach said.

“The first time she wore Valentino in public was when she was under contract,” he added of Zendaya.

He continued: “So when I said, ‘If you say no, it’ll be no forever,’ that rang true for a long, long time.”

Earlier in the interview, Roach was asked about his confidence and he credited Zendaya with helping him find his voice early in his own career.

“She was always the one who advocated for me and made sure I was in those rooms where people thought I didn’t belong. Even as a young girl, I’m talking about 16, 17 years old,” he said.

“We’d sit in meeting rooms with clients and companies and CEOs and they’d try to make me invisible and she’d say, ‘Right has something to say’ or someone [would] tries to talk to me and she’s like, ‘Oh, well he just asked you,’ and it was like those little, little things that whenever someone tried to take over, she’d give it right back to me. ”
