Zoe Ball to take time off Radio 2 after revealing devastating family news saying ‘these are extremely tough times’

ZOE Ball has revealed she will be taking time away from radio after her mum was diagnosed with cancer.

The 53-year-old shared the devastating news tonight and revealed that Gaby Roslin will replace her on BBC Radio 2.

Alongside a picture of her mum Julia in hospital and surrounded by her loved ones, Zoe wrote: “Heartbreakingly, our beautiful mum Julia has been diagnosed with cancer. As many of you know from experience, these are extremely difficult times. Mom is incredibly brave.”

She continued: “My brother Jamie and I are absolutely delighted with the brilliant doctors, nurses and support teams looking after mum. Thank you.”

Zoe thanked her family and friends for their support and sent love to anyone going through the same thing.

The star added: “I try to be at work for breakfast as often as I can, but occasionally I have to be at home with my mum. thanks Gaby for jumping in. Full of love.”

Zoe’s celebrity friends and fans rushed to show her support.

Paddy McGuinness commented: “Sending you all love. x”

Gabby Roslin said: “I love you Zoe and so much love to your beautiful mum.”

While Natalie Cassidy wrote: “Sending so much love to you all.”

Relationship with mom

The star previously spoke about her complex relationship with Julia – after her parents split up.

She previously said: “I haven’t seen my mum Julia for a few years – she was very young when she married my dad and had me, and when they split up I lived with my dad and my other ‘mum’, his wife Diane.”

They were very close in recent years, and Zoe supported her after her husband passed away in 2013.

Speaking to the Mail, she explained: “She was with her third husband, Rick Peckham – she finally got it right – for 25 years and he was such a wonderful man and such a part of our family life.

“He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in January 2012 and died in December – we all miss him very much. When he was very ill, a house two doors down from us became available; we wanted him to spend the last few days by the sea, so have moved here.”

She added: “I look after mum a bit now; I see her almost every day. She’s beautiful.”

Gaby came in as host of the show this morning.

Zoe usually hosts her breakfast slot on Radio 2 every weekday morning from 6.30am to 9.30am.

She took over the coveted breakfast show in early 2019, taking over from Chris Evans.

Zoe has a long history on air and even hosted an early breakfast show on Radio 1 in the 90s.
