During her graduation she started working at Ogilvy Cape Town. In 2017, she participated in the Miss South Africa beauty pageant. She was selected among the top 26 semifinalists but failed to make the top 12. In 2019, she competed again in Miss South Africa.

On December 8, 2019, she represented her country in the 2019 Miss Universe competition. Tunzi won the title and was crowned by Catriona Gray (Miss Universe 2018). The event took place at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, was hosted by American comedian Steve Harvey, and aired on Fox.
The first runner-up in the beauty pageant was Madison Anderson from Puerto Rico, and the second runner-up was Sofia Aragon from Mexico.

- Tunzi became the third Miss South Africa to win the title of Miss Universe. Two other women to win this title are Margaret Gardiner (1978) and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (2017).
