The gas can was then crushed, causing debris to explode from the back of the truck, causing Sean to writhe in pain.

The video of the incident was released by the council to warn of the danger of improper disposal of hazardous materials.

Sean was taken to the hospital, suffering from hearing problems and dizziness after the explosion.

The garbage truck was also completely destroyed.

Newham Council is now warning of the dangers of improperly disposing of items such as vapes, batteries, gas canisters and bottles.

Some items pose a serious risk when thrown into normal household waste or recycling bins, with the potential for fires, explosions and life-threatening injuries that repel operatives and bystanders.

Councilor Sarah Ruiz, the statutory deputy mayor, said the footage was a “stark reminder of the dangers posed by improperly disposed hazardous items”.

She added: “We are grateful that our member of staff is now recovering but this incident could have been a lot worse.

“We all need to be aware that items such as vapes, electrical items, batteries, gas tanks and bottles do not belong in household waste or recycling bins.

“These items can cause fires, explosions, serious injuries, putting both our waste management teams and the wider community at risk.

“I urge everyone to be proactive and responsible and take these dangerous items to the appropriate recycling locations.

“We must work together to responsibly and safely dispose of hazardous waste.”

Newham Borough said it will be adding new mini-recycling collection points across the borough later this year for the safe disposal of smaller electrical items including watches, remote controls, games consoles and kettles.

ITEMS TO BE SAFELY DISPOSED OF

Vapes: Lithium-ion batteries in vapes can ignite when crushed, causing fires in collection vehicles and recycling facilities.

Electrical items: Devices with batteries or plugs can explode or catch fire, endangering workers at multiple points in the waste management process.

Batteries: Even small batteries can cause fires when disposed of in general waste, with more than 1,200 battery-related fires reported in the UK last year.

Gas cylinders: Nitrous oxide tanks and other gas cylinders, even when empty, can cause explosions when crushed, posing a significant threat to waste and infrastructure workers.

It comes after two scavengers managed to escape – when an item left in a bin exploded in their truck.

CCTV footage released last month showed a waste worker walking away from the lorry moments before debris fell across a road in Barnet, north London.

Footage captured by a camera attached to the back of the truck shows a worker emptying a black bin into the vehicle.

Seconds later, as he began to haul away the empty bin, a powerful explosion from inside the truck sent trash across the street and sent smoke into the air.

The explosion blew the bin out of the garbageman’s hands, but luckily he and his colleagues escaped unharmed.

Barnet Council said the explosion was caused by a flammable object or objects such as gas canisters or bottles, batteries or aerosol cans that were mistakenly placed in household waste.
