Two police officers and a firefighter were killed and other officers were injured after responding to a call in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville on Sunday, Minnesota’s governor said.
“This morning we received terrible news from Burnsville,” Governor Tim Walz wrote in a statement. Responding to a call from a threatened family, two police officers and a fireman lost their lives, and other officers were injured.
At approximately 10:23 a.m. local time on Sunday, the St. Paul for alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives, he announced on Twitter alarm who said ATF agents responded to a scene in Burnsville, “where there were reports of an officer-involved shooting at a home.”
No specific details about what led to Sunday’s shooting were immediately released. The shooter involved in the incident is also dead, NBC News reported, citing a statement from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Walz added that the group is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

The governor ordered flags in Minnesota to be flown at half-staff on Monday in honor of the victims.
“We must never take for granted the courage and sacrifices our first responders make every day,” his statement continued. “Today, the families of these public servants received a call they knew was possible but hoped would never come. My heart goes out to those grieving families – the state of Minnesota stands ready to support in any way it can. This is a tragic loss for our country.”
In a message published on x (formerly known as Twitter), Burnsville Police Chief Brian O’Hara wrote, “Please keep the Burnsville Police Department in your prayers this morning.”
Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association Executive Director Brian Peters said in a statement that the state’s law enforcement community is “heartbroken” by the deaths of their colleagues.
“We’re just devastated by the terrible loss,” Peters added. “These heroes leave behind loved ones and a community that will forever remember their bravery and dedication to keeping Minnesotans safe.”
Law Enforcement Executive Director Jim Mortenson said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the police officers and emergency responders who responded to the domestic call this morning. These officers were shot down while responding to the duty of service and protection. We mourn with the community of Burnsville and the families of those killed.”

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote x that she and her husband, John Bessler, pray for the victims and their families.
“I learned from the police this morning that three officers were shot in Burnsville,” she wrote on Twitter. “They were doing their job. They were protecting our community.”
