2 Students Injured After N.J. Bus Crashes Into Home When Brakes Fail

“She did a great job saving the kids in the boat,” Edison Police Chief Tom Bryan said of the school bus driver

Two students were injured when their school bus crashed into a home in New Jersey on Wednesday morning, and police said the cause was brake failure, according to multiple news outlets.

According to Edison Police Chief Tom Bryan, who spoke at a news conference reported by News12 New Jersey, police received a 911 call around 8:06 a.m. local time about a bus carrying about 30 high school students. The vehicle was traveling on Rahway Road in Edison before going through a home, News12 New Jersey reports.

“It was reported that the driver attempted to stop and was unable to stop at the Ziger intersection on Rahway Road,” he said. “I was also told she did a great job saving the children on board.”

“She avoided hitting three other houses and ended up running through the garage of another house … knocking over a couple of fences before that,” Bryan further noted.

The Edison police chief said two students suffered minor injuries and the driver was injured, adding that the brakes on the bus reportedly failed. He added that the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Commission of Motor Vehicles will inspect the vehicle.

The homeowners were not present when the incident occurred, according to News12 New Jersey. The cleaners were inside the residence, but they were fine.

The passengers on the bus attended John Adams High School, WABC-TV reports.

“There were several students with minor injuries,” Edison Township Public Schools Superintendent Edward Aldarelli said, according to WCBS-TV. “Their parents are with them right now and we’re getting updates on that. There are counseling centers for students who have been transported back to school. Our building principal, as well as our teachers and counselors, are providing support.”

Aldarelli also said, according to News 12 New Jersey, that most of the students on the bus continued with their school day. “They’re obviously traumatized right now,” he said, “so we want to make sure their welfare is our number one priority.”

Edison resident Rachel Endress told WCBS, “I think it’s something I’ve never seen before and I hope I don’t have to witness it again.”
