2 Teens Dead After Stolen Car Rolls Over amid Police Chase in Houston

Two teenagers were killed and two others were injured in a one-car rollover during a “high-speed” police chase in Houston.

The fatal incident — in which the unidentified driver, 19, and passenger, 16, were killed — happened at 12:55 a.m. Jan. 12 at 7590 South Loop West near South Interstate Highway 610 West, according to the Houston Police Department.

“Southeast Patrol officers observed a stolen vehicle in the area of ​​Gulf Highway (South Interstate Highway 45) and Park Place Boulevard, [but] when officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver fled from police at a high rate of speed,” HPD Sergeant Derrick Hall and Officer R. Singleton reported in a news release.

HPD’s statement said the driver refused to stop and fled on Gulf Expressway before losing control of the car and hitting a barrier, causing the car to flip several times.

“The driver and left rear seat passenger were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department EMS,” police added. The male passenger, 18, and the female passenger, 16, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

PEOPLE has reached out to HPD for more details about the crash and the identities of the victims, who have been withheld until the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences notifies their families.
