Five people were killed after a small plane crashed on a highway in Nashville and caught fire Monday night.

According to media reports, Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said the pilot was cleared to make an emergency landing, but shortly after he reported he was unable to reach the airport.
Aaron recalled witnesses to the crash who said the plane was “obviously in danger as it flew over the interstate.”
“We are lucky that the aircraft did not hit any buildings while falling,” he added to CNN.

Nashville firefighters were on the scene after the crash.
“NFD crews responded to this single-engine aircraft crash that had heavy fire present when they arrived on scene,” NFD said in statement posted on X. “Crews were able to extinguish the fire while preserving evidence so the appropriate agencies could investigate what led to the fatal crash.”
NFD spokeswoman Kendra Loney added of the crash, according to CNN, “That impact was catastrophic and left no survivors.”
