6-Year-Old Boy Dies a Month After Adult Neighbor Allegedly Beats Him with Baseball Bat: ‘Horrifying’

A six-year-old boy who was attacked with a baseball bat by his adult neighbor last month has died from his injuries.

In an update posted on GoFundMe on Tuesday, Jeremy Diaz’s father announced that the boy had a sudden “neural storm” after weeks of recovering from various injuries. After six hours, efforts to resuscitate Jeremy failed and he was pronounced dead, Jeremy’s father wrote. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed the boy’s death.

“He fought for over 60 days and was on the mend, but in the end the odds were against him,” reads a GoFundMe update written by Jeremy’s father, later adding, “I was there when he took his first breath and saw him take his own air . the last — no parent should see their children buried before them. Thank you all for supporting us and especially for supporting Jeremy. He was a wonderful, loving child who practiced the Golden Rule. I am satisfied with him.”

The alleged “random attack” took place on September 11 around 5 a.m. in Georgetown, Texas. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a disturbance in a residential area where police identified 39-year-old Daniel Logan as the man who entered his neighbor’s home and assaulted two people, including Jeremy, the department said in a statement.

Logan is charged with two first-degree felonies: injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. Logan also allegedly hit his 65-year-old mother, Cynthia Logan, with a bat, according to local news station Fox 7.

“While the investigation is ongoing, we are in constant communication with the district attorney’s office as we await the results of the autopsy,” the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said in the latest statement. “Upon receipt of the findings from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, and if warranted, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office, will present the case to a grand jury for charges to be upgraded to capital murder.”

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the boy and his family during this difficult time,” Logan’s attorney, Marc Chavez, told PEOPLE in part in a statement before Jeremy’s death. “While the allegations sound worrying, we ask everyone to withhold judgment until all the facts come to light, particularly as we investigate the issues associated with serious mental illness.”

Jeremy’s GoFundMe page described him as a “bright, bubbly kid with a heart full of dreams and a future full of potential.”
