A Cup of Cheer! PEOPLE’s Hallmark Christmas Movie Drinking Game

Hallmark Christmas movies have become an indispensable part of the holiday season. With dozens of new movies each year starting airing as early as July through Halloween, viewers have plenty of opportunities to share in the heartwarming magic of the season offered by every movie on the Hallmark Channel.

Whether it’s a small-town business owner who finds love while stranded during a December road trip or a New York lawyer who returns home for the holidays and rekindles an old love, Hallmark’s made-for-TV Christmas movies always bring together the holiday family traditions (hot chocolate! ice cream cone! tree lighting!) with quintessential romantic comedy tropes (enemies-turned-lovers, falling in love with high school sweethearts, kisses under the mistletoe).

Since many of the movies share similar themes and picturesque landscapes, PEOPLE has created a Hallmark Christmas movie drinking game that’s the perfect fit for winter nights curled up on the couch watching the channel’s witty, love-filled offerings.

Feel free to apply the rules to Lifetime’s Christmas specials, Great American Family specials, Netflix’s holiday originals, and UPtv’s merry and bright programming. Be creative, but don’t end up on the naughty list!

Have a drink if…

  • The camera moves over the skyline of NYC or Los Angeles.
  • The character of the main actress is called Eve, Holly, Joy or Noel. Two sips if the last name is Claus or Kringle.
  • The main character works as a journalist, baker or corporate businesswoman. Two sips if any of it is a family affair. Three sips if that company is threatened in any way by a large corporation.
  • The leading lady goes to a small town on an assignment during the holidays. Two sips if it’s her hometown. Try if she is also up for promotion. (This project will make or break her career!)
  • The star has a Grinch-like boss who “doesn’t get holidays.”
  • The character has a dead parent. Drink whenever a deceased parent is mentioned.
  • The protagonist is reminded of how much they loved the holidays as kids.
  • The leading lady is dating a businessman who spends more time on the phone than with her. Two sips if engaged. Take a sip every time he wonders if he’s in the right relationship.
  • Someone enters a baking contest. Drink whenever the competition is mentioned in conversation.
  • Everyone goes holiday shopping or ice skating, drinks hot chocolate, bakes Christmas cookies, takes a sleigh ride, or sings a Christmas carol (one sip each time one of those actions occurs).
  • Someone is going shopping for a Christmas tree. Take another sip if they garnish it.
  • Everyone attends Christmas lights, a festival or a concert. Drink whenever any of the three events are mentioned. Give it a try if there is a last minute change of plans.
  • Copyright is included.
  • The leading lady is arguing with the man she will apparently end up falling for.
  • A couple of slow dances. Two sips if they dance to a Christmas carol.
  • Almost the first kiss. Record when the first kiss finally occurs. Finish your drink if the kiss happens in the snow.
  • A holiday wedding or engagement is coming up (one drink for each).
  • Someone is going to winter. Two sips if stranded during rest.
  • Santa Claus is disguised as an ordinary person.
  • Anyone suggest plans for New Year’s Eve.
  • The star eventually moves back to their hometown.
  • Small business beats corporate greed (finish your drink).
  • The leading lady reconnects with her ex-boyfriend. Drink to the finish if she leaves her businessman boyfriend/fiancé for him or a man she met during her holiday travels.
