Instead, he realizes that his friend, Ariadne Oliver, worked in league with his bodyguard, Vitale Portfoglio, to convince him to attend the séance. Assisting in the media stunts, Ariadne hoped to encourage Poirot to return to work after his retirement and uncover the case as material for her next book, after her three recent novels had failed. Despite this, the couple is not responsible for the murder.

Poirot finally concludes, out of his own confusion, that Ariadne accidentally poisoned him using a certain type of honey grown by Rowena. Ariadne unknowingly put it in his tea after a mysterious person tried to kill him, but he was actually poisoned by flowers that Rowena got during a visit to Istanbul.

He reveals that Rowena was furious and miserable that Alicia had fallen in love and got engaged to Maxime, leaving her ‘abandoned’. After the engagement broke off and realizing that Alicia’s lover wanted to make up with her, Rowena kept Alicia poisoned and weak, and refused to allow her ex-fiancé to visit her.

After being persuaded to rest after staying with Alicia, Alicia was actually accidentally killed by her housekeeper, Olga, who fed her an overdose of honey tea, not knowing it was poison. Realizing Olga’s mistake after finding her daughter dead, Alicia threw her over the wall of the building, feigning suicide.

After receiving blackmail letters about the death, Rowena suspects that Joyce or Leslie are behind it. She kills Joyce and changes the clock in the music room for an ironclad alibi, before convincing the doctor to kill himself after locking him in a room and then threatening to hurt his son, Leopold. After being exposed, it is revealed that she had hoped to end the blackmail while attributing the two deaths to hauntings in her Venetian home.

It is eventually revealed that Leopold was the one behind the blackmail letters, after recognizing signs of poison on Alicia’s body, which his father had missed. He used the money to help Leslie, who was shocked and traumatized after World War II and unable to work as such.

The film’s conclusion also leaves Hercule’s thoughts on the supernatural entities in the house somewhat questionable, as he seems to believe Leopold, who claims to hear the voices of children who died there.
