Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev are on a deadly international mission.
Vertical shared a new trailer for the pair’s new film on Wednesday Mason exclusively with PEOPLE. The film, based on the 2010 novel of the same name, follows 55-year-old Eckhart as ex-CIA operative Steve Vail who is brought out of retirement to help the agency hunt down a villain who framed the murders of foreign journalists for the spy agency.
The trailer catches up with 34-year-old Dobrev’s CIA agent character as she warns her boss, played by Tim Blake Nelson, about the film’s evil assassin. The pair fly off to meet with Steve and convince him to return to the agency and bring in the killer.
Steve and Dobrev’s character travel to Greece to investigate the murders, and an already dangerous situation becomes more deadly as Steve finds a use for his masonry tool even in fight-or-die scenarios.

“As other nations begin to turn against the US, the CIA must bring Steve Vail – its most brilliant and rebellious operative – out of retirement,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while uncovering an international conspiracy.”

Mason directed by Renny Harlin, who is currently working on three upcoming sequels to the 2008 horror film. Strangers acting RiverdaleMadelaine Petsch, according to a report by Deadline. He is also filming another upcoming movie with Eckhart titled Deep water.
Screenwriters Hannah Weg and Matt Johnson wrote the action thriller based on a story by Paul Lindsay, who wrote Mason novel under the pseudonym Noah Boyd.

Besides Eckhart, Nelson and Dobrev, MasonThe cast also includes Clifton Collins Jr. and Ilfenesh Hadera.
Eckhart most recently starred in the 2023 films Rumbling through the dark, sniffing and Ambush. Dobrev starred in the Netflix action comedy Outside the law this year, as well as in comedy Sick girl.
Mason out in theaters and digitally on January 5, 2024.
