For the wedding, the couple used pearl and gold as the color scheme. They explained that the gold represented the sunrise, a metaphor for their new beginning together. “The hope is that our marriage will be eternal and faithful like the rising sun,” Dorsey said.

“The pearl symbolizes the purity of our love and the organic way in which our love was created,” he added.

When planning the ceremony with Slomique Hawrylo, their planner and designer, Dorsey and Roberson envisioned something small, intimate and sacred by the ocean. Among those in attendance were Anthony Mackie, Ava DuVernay and Tasha Smith.

“We like the symbolism of the ocean and the sense of eternity,” Dorsey said. “We wanted to get married by the ocean, but we also wanted to be inside with more controlled elements. Casa Del Mar has a beautiful ballroom overlooking the ocean that was perfect for us.”

In addition to having their own officiant — Dorsey’s cousin, Pastor Eric Lee — the couple wanted to incorporate a circular seating arrangement because of the shapes that symbolize connection and eternity.

The couple also conducted a traditional three-strand rope ceremony to commemorate the joining of two people in marriage by God.

“We’re both very proud of each other. We’ve both faced all the odds professionally and we’re both fans of each other,” Dorsey said. “We also admire the hard work and passion they show each other in everything they do. Work, friendship, play…everything.”

During the ceremony, Roberson walked down the aisle to her favorite song, “Ac” by Stevie Wonder. She wore a custom wedding dress designed by Grace Pei of Jinza Bridal with a detachable train for dancing and casual photos on the beach.

“Grace automatically knew and understood the intent behind the pearl-embellished gown, which was simplicity, elegance and sacred modesty,” Roberson said.

“I’m looking forward to that dress!” Dorsey added on the eve of the wedding day. “Crystle makes everything she wears look fabulous, so I was anticipating with every fiber of my being that she would walk down that aisle in something made just for her!”

At the altar, Dorsey and Roberson exchanged handwritten vows. “When a writer marries an actress, you know the vows have to be handwritten,” Dorsey said. “And the actor will probably perform it as a Shakespearean monologue. Complete with props and music.”

The ceremony was followed by a family celebration ending with a five-course dinner with dishes such as caviar, sea bass, beef ribs and eggplant. The newlyweds also served a white chocolate, pearl and gold cake from Sweet Traders.

During the celebration, Grammy-nominated singer Curtis Harding sang one of the couple’s favorite songs, “I Won’t Let You Down” from his album If words were flowers. Later in the evening, the couple danced their first dance to “Something” by The Beatles.

“We discovered in the pandemic that we are two of the biggest Beatles fans,” Dorsey said. “We just sat up one night and sang Beatles songs until dawn. And we both agreed that ‘Something’ was one of the most simply beautiful pieces ever written about love.”

Dorsey and Roberson met at the Toronto Film Festival where Dorsey was premiering his new film Harriet. The two became fast friends after discovering their mutual love for Gordon Parks and the Atlanta Falcons.

On October 3, 2022, after Dorsey’s original plans to propose were thwarted by an emergency at Roberson’s work, he acted spontaneously and popped the question that same day. He proposed to her with a one-of-a-kind Oscar Bayeh ring from Oscar’s Design Jewelry in downtown LA.

“We’re both human jukeboxes who will belt out any song that pops into their heads at any given moment,” Dorsey said. “Most likely the other joins the randomness and completes it with a dance. We have fun together and stay who we are. We want to do this until we’re two old jukeboxes dancing.”

After the intimate wedding, the couple is looking forward to throwing another, bigger party on New Year’s Eve. This reception will feature all new wedding attire and looks.

“D Nice will be DJing at the wedding celebration on New Year’s Eve,” added Roberson. “As we all know, he is one of the most loved DJs! And he is Omar’s brother from another mother.”

After all the festivities die down, the couple is excited to embark on their honeymoon. Although they had to postpone their original honeymoon in Egypt due to the war between Israel and Hamas, they are looking for other places to travel next year.

“Our next chapter will be a true unification of personal and professional. Together we develop creative projects as well as other entrepreneurial endeavors,” added Roberson.
