“I was very, very pleased,” McDonald said when he saw the first draft of the script for the sequel
Adam Sandler is working on a sequel to one of his most beloved films.
Sandlerova Happy Gilmore actor Christopher McDonald said during a recent interview with Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan that Sandler, 57, is rewatching the beloved 1996 sports comedy.
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he said, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this,'” recalled McDonald, 69. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft Happy Gilmore 2.”
After the hosts were stunned by the news, McDonald added: “Maybe you should throw it out because I don’t want to be a liar, but he showed it to me and I was like, ‘Wow, that would be great.’ ”

“So it’s in the works. The fans are demanding it, dammit,” McDonald continued while also taking a moment to praise Sandler’s more recent projects.
“Adam is killing himself. I saw his latest Netflix comedy series. I was laughing [at] all. Everything was in tears. He’s so freaking funny,” McDonald said. “We had a great time, and when I saw that, I was very, very pleased.”
PEOPLE has reached out to Sandler’s rep for comment.
IN Happy Gilmore, Sandler plays the main character who takes up golf after a failed hockey career and joins a tournament to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure. McDonald plays his nemesis, Shooter McGavin.

McDonald said his character is something he remembers nobody “loved” in the early days of the film.
“I’m kind of beside myself. I went to the first screening when the movie first came out and nobody was laughing or loving The Shooter. I think it was mostly Adam’s friends there,” McDonald recalled.
“The best way to play a villain like Shooter McGavin is to introduce him in a sleazy way, but elevate the main guy. That’s what villains are for. I know I fall down at the end because that’s the way it was written, but it’s just wonderful to play that kind of stuff and really I enjoyed it,” he continued.
