Adrien Brody Developed an Eating Disorder, PTSD After Weight Loss for The Pianist: ‘Necessary for Storytelling’

Adrien Brody revealed his Oscar-winning role in Roman Polanski’s 2003 biopic. Pianist took a huge toll on his body.

In an interview with Supreleased on December 23, the 51-year-old actor revealed that he developed an eating disorder and suffered from PTSD after taking on the role.

Brody portrayed Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman in the film, and prepared for the role by adopting a near-starvation diet in order to lose 30 pounds. and dropped his weight to 129 lbs. Plus, the star was “barely drinking water when they started shooting.”

“It was a physical transformation that was necessary for storytelling,” he told the news outlet. “But then it kind of opened me up, spiritually, to a depth of understanding of emptiness and hunger in a way I’d never known.”

Brody admitted that there are long-term effects of that physical transformation, dealing with insomnia, panic attacks and PTSD from the experience.

“I definitely had an eating disorder for at least a year,” he added. “And then I was depressed for a year, if not my whole life. Just kidding, just kidding.”

Brody is no stranger to method acting and said he usually works very hard to prepare for a film.

“When he was filming Jacket, sci-fi thriller where he is sent to a mental institution, he told the director to leave him in a straitjacket so he could feel it,” Sup recounted. “He broke his nose when someone accidentally punched him in the face during filming Sam’s summer, giving it a permanent dent.”

For destroyed, Brody actually ate ants and worms while portraying a character stranded in the woods. And for his role in Oxygen, he got metal prosthetics for his character instead of prosthetics.

“I didn’t know how freaking painful it was until they stuck the pliers in and ended up yanking it off my tooth,” he said.

Brody’s latest work has arrived Brutalistfilm A24 in which he plays Hungarian-Jewish architect László Toth, who survived the Holocaust and immigrated to the US to find work.

On December 3, the New York Film Critics’ Circle awarded him the Best Actor Award for his performance.
