According to reports, Shraddha and Aftab often quarreled after moving to Delhi and Shraddha allegedly forced him to marry her. There are reports that the couple decided to start over with a trip to the mountains in March and April. On May 18, 2022, after allegedly being pressured by Shraddha to marry, Aftab strangled her to death and chopped her body into 35 pieces and kept it in a 300-liter refrigerator in a rented apartment in Delhi; around midnight, He disposed of Shraddha’s body parts in rows inside and outside the city. According to some media reports, Aftab watched many crime movies and web series to carry out the murders. Aftab’s plan reportedly originated from the American crime network series “Dexter,” which follows the life of a man who commits crimes by night and solves crimes by day. According to Delhi Police sources, Aftab chopped up Shraddha’s body with a mini saw and threw her clothes into a garbage truck. To avoid suspicion, Aftab used Shraddha’s social media and paid her credit card bills until June 2022.
Tracking and arrest of Aftab Poonawala
According to reports, in September 2022, one of Shraddha’s friends told her father that she had not been in contact with her daughter for nearly 2.5 months, after which Shraddha’s father filed a complaint with Vasai in Maharashtra on October 12, 2022. A missing report was filed at the Manickpur police station; however, based on Shraddha’s last location, the case was transferred to the Mehrauli police station in New Delhi.

Her father suspects Aftab’s involvement in his daughter’s disappearance. According to sources, Aftab was summoned for questioning by the Mumbai police on November 3, 2022, and he claimed that Shraddha left the house in May after a fight. Aftab was arrested on November 11, 2022, from his house in Chhatarpur under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of crime).

South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankit Chauhan told the media in an interview that Aftab admitted his crime and said that he disposed of Shraddha’s body in a forest area near Chhatarpur Enclave. Ankit Chauhan said,
The accused told us that he chopped her body into pieces and dumped it in a forest area near Chhatarpur enclave. He has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. ”

On December 15, 2022, Aftab submitted a bail request to the court, but Aftab later withdrew the request on December 22, 2022. Poonawala’s personal lawyer MS Khan later said the bail application was due to “miscommunication” between them. A Delhi court on December 23, 2022 extended his judicial custody by 14 days. On May 9, 2023, Delhi’s Saket court charged him with murder in the Shraddha Walker murder case. Announcing the order, ASJ Manisha Khurana Kakkar said,
On May 18, 2022, after 6:30 am, you murdered Shraddha Walkar, an offense punishable under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Between May 18 and October 18, you knowingly cut her body into pieces with the intention of eliminating evidence and dumped her body in Chhatarpur and other places. Therefore, you have committed the crime of disappearance of evidence. ”
