An empty cage is a reason to smile at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center.
“Every empty kennel means a puppy is resting his head in his new home,” the Florida shelter wrote on Facebook, along with a video detailing a recent adoption success.
According to a spokesperson for Hillsborough County, Florida, the county hosted the Tampa Bay Mega Adoption Event, a weekend adoption event for public animal shelters in the area.
The event was held May 17-19 and was a “huge success,” according to a May 21 Facebook post by the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, which featured photos of smiling people with their new pets.
“In just three days, 459 dogs found their new families, including 123 from the Pet Resource Center!” he added the shelter on social media.

Animals finding homes are always good news, but Hillsborough County Pet Center especially welcomes them. In the lead up to the adoption event, the public shelter was overcrowded for months. A spokesman for Hillsborough County, Florida, estimated the shelter was at 150 percent capacity before the Mega Adoption Event.
The 123 adoptions helped the Pet Resource Center free up some much-needed space, which will go to other pets looking for forever families.
The shelter celebrated the loss of its overcrowded status with a video of staff members standing in more than 30 empty cages cleared by the adoption event.
“This is because of you! Because of your support during this year’s Mega Adoption Event, our B kennel is completely EMPTY,” the shelter wrote in a May 22 Facebook post.

The video shows the camera traveling down the central aisle of the dog-less kennel, filming shelter staff members smiling in front of the door of empty cage after empty cage. In the end, there are not enough staff members to fit all the empty cages.
Although the Hillsborough County Pet Center is no longer overcrowded, the shelter still has dozens of pets looking for a home. Visit the shelter’s website to learn more about the animals available for adoption now.
