Agatha Kongkal Sangma is an Indian politician who serves as a member of the Lok Sabha and represents the Tula constituency in Meghalaya. Notably, at the age of 29, she became the youngest person in the history of India to be appointed as a Union Minister in the Government of India. Notably, she is the second woman from Northeast India to be appointed to this post after Renuka Devi Barkataki of Assam. Agatha Kongkal Sangma belongs to the National People’s Party.

Agatha Kongkal Sangma was born on Thursday, July 24, 1980 in New Delhi, India. She grew up in the West Garo Hills region of Meghalaya. After completing her LLB from Pune University, she became an advocate at the Delhi High Court. She continued her education by completing a Masters in Environmental Management at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Agatha Sangma and Dr. Patrick Rongma Marak tied the knot in a wedding ceremony held at the Sacred Heart Shrine in Tula, Meghalaya on November 21, 2019 . The event was attended by many government officials, ministers and famous Indian football player Baichung Bhutia. Patrick is a doctor at the Northeast Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Shillong. Notably, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the couple via a tweet.

In May 2008, Sangma won the 14th Lok Sabha by-election and began her political journey. The opportunity arose after her father Prasangma resigned from office and ventured into state politics. Subsequently, she was re-elected as a member of the 15th Lok Sabha. It is noteworthy that at the age of 29, Sangma became the youngest Member of Parliament to hold the post of Union Minister in the Government of India.

Initially, she served as Minister of State for Rural Development. However, she gave up the position after a cabinet reshuffle in October 2012. In November 2017, there were reports that she intended to contest the 2018 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections as a candidate of the National People’s Party (NPP). She contested in the Nantula constituency, received 6,499 votes and won the seat. She later resigned as a member of the House of Representatives to create an opportunity for her brother to contest a by-election in her constituency.

Protests over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) spread to the residence of Tula MP Agatha Sangma on Wednesday. Students staged a protest that culminated in her home, expressing concerns about her support for the bill. Protesters on motorcycles and cars gathered at Agatha Sangma’s residence and chanted slogans such as “Down with the BJP, down with Agatha”.
