Aisha Mills News

In the newly drawn Hudson Valley 18th Congressional District, which spans three counties and was left without an incumbent after a judge drew the new district lines for New York in May, three Democrats are vying for their party’s nomination.

Pat Ryan, the executive of Ulster County, Aisha Mills, a political consultant and cable-news pundit and host who resides in Newburgh, and Moses Mugulusi, a state financial examiner from the village of Florida, are the candidates in the Aug. 23 18th District primary. There are ten days of early voting that begin on Saturday.

In the general election on November 8th, the victor will take on Republican assemblyman Colin Schmitt from New Windsor. All of Orange County, most of Dutchess, and a portion of Ulster are included in the district. For the past ten years, Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney has represented Orange County, part of Dutchess, Putnam, and part of Westchester. However, with the redistricting, his Putnam residence is now in the new 17th District. As a result of his decision to seek for re-election in the 17th District, a late opening in the new 18th was made for other Democrats.

In the district, which Joe Biden won by eight percentage points in 2020, there are 46,000 more Democratic voters than Republican ones. The Cook Political Report gives the seat a rating of B despite the enrolment advantage.

He bragged about his experience commanding men from various backgrounds and guiding Ulster through the pandemic in an interview. He claimed that under his direction, the county found a developer to revive an IBM campus that had been abandoned for 27 years, reduced the petrol tax by 50%, and increased money for other services such as mental health care without raising taxes.
