AJ Michalka and Miley Cyrus are long gone.
The Aly & AJ musician and actress, 33, recently performed a cover of Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” during her season 12 performance as Strawberry Shortcake Masked singerand now he’s looking back on his time with the Grammy winner during their time on the Disney Channel.
Not only did Aly & AJ open for Cyrus on the 2006 Best of Both Worlds Tour, but Hannah Montana premiered exactly the same night as the original sister duo movie on the Disney Channel Belles cow the same year.

“Me, Aly, and Miley had this whole moment on set where we could interview each other and talk about these new premieres, and we were all giddy and young and excited. It’s a staple memory with her that’s just adorable,” AJ says PEOPLE after finishing in third place Masked singer.
The sisters also spent time with Cyrus (32) outside of work. “I remember one Halloween, she came and carved pumpkins with us at our house, and we had a pumpkin carving competition with a bunch of friends,” he recalls.

“She’s a very down-to-earth, totally cool person,” AJ adds of the “Flowers” singer. “Just what you think you’re going to get, you’re going to get, which is what I love about her.”
Sharing the stage with Cyrus in arenas across the United States was also a great experience for The Goldbergs star. “We had a great relationship with each other. I mean, we could go on tour together for months. We really hit it off on and off stage. Our moms were friends. Our senses of humor were very similar,” she says. “And we got to sing the song Kiss with her, [“Rock and Roll All Nite,”] every night.”
The former child stars haven’t met in a while, but AJ is hoping Cyrus will get a chance to see her perform “Wrecking Ball.”
“I was going to get to Miley the night of the broadcast but I didn’t, which is stupid, but I haven’t seen her in so long,” she says. “But I just want to reach out and say, “I had fun singing that song. It’s so good.”
