Alana Ladd News

Alan Ladd Jr., a powerful executive for Fox and MGM/United Artists who hired George Lucas to create Star Wars, produced Braveheart, won an Oscar for best picture, and passed away on March 2, according to his family. He was 84.

On March 2, 2022, Alan Ladd, Jr. passed away quietly at home, surrounded by his family, according to a statement posted on social media by his daughter Amanda Ladd-Jones, who also directed the 2017 feature documentary Laddie: The Man Behind the Movies. His loss cannot be adequately expressed in words. In spite of his passing, his influence on films and filmmaking will endure.

As a studio head and producer, Ladd was in charge of such Hollywood classics as Alien, Blade Runner, The Omen, All That Jazz, Norma Rae, Chariots of Fire, Thelma & Louise, and Young Frankenstein in addition to Star Wars and Braveheart. In total, his films received more than 150 nominations, more than 50 Academy Award nominations, and two victories for Best Picture. In Laddie, Brooks remarked that if you had to work for a studio boss, he was the one.

Ladd, the son of Shane and The Great Gatsby actor Alan Ladd, was born on October 22, 1937, in Los Angeles. He spent his formative years in the entertainment business. He got his start in the industry as a motion picture talent agent at Creative Management Associates, and he started making films in the early 1970s. Heavyweights like Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, and Judy Garland were among his clients. Later, Ladd moved to London, where he spent four years producing nine films.

Ladd was in his mid-30s and had a low-key manner when he returned to Los Angeles in 1973 to work as the head of creative affairs at Twentieth Century Fox. He was a man of few words compared to the industry’s chattering norms. He soon advanced through the ranks, and in 1976 he was appointed studio president. He was captivated by the then-unreleased film American Graffiti soon after joining Fox and sought out a meeting with its young filmmaker, George Lucas, to ask if he had any ideas for more films.
