Alka Lamba joined the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in 1994 and was appointed as the convener of Girls, Delhi State. In 1995, she won the election for the post of President of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). In 1996, Alka Lamba was appointed NSUI All India Convenor for Girls and in 1997, she was appointed All India NSUI President. In 2002, Arka became the general secretary of the All India Mahila Congress Party. In 2003, she contested the Delhi Assembly elections. The electorate from Moti Nagar constituency took on BJP leader Madan Lal Khurrana but lost. In 2006, Lamba became a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and was appointed general secretary of the Delhi State Congress Committee (DPCC). In the same year, she was appointed deputy director of the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD). From 2007 to 2011, she served as secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress. Alka left INC in December 2014 and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

In 2015, she contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Chandni Chowk constituency under the name of Aam Aadmi Party and won by a margin of 18,287 votes. She left AAP on September 6, 2019, after months of anguish with the party. On the same day, she joined the Congress led by Sonia Gandhi.

In 2020, she contested from the Chandni Chowk seat in the Delhi Assembly elections on a Congress ticket but lost to AAP’s Parlad Singh Sawhney.

- In December 2018, the AAP passed a resolution in the Delhi Assembly to revoke the Bharat Ratna Medal awarded to former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Alka posted the resolution on her social media account and claimed the party pressured her to support the resolution and that she had withdrawn. Following this, the party asked her to resign from the Delhi Assembly and as a primary member of the party. They reportedly demanded her resignation because she pressured them to support Rajiv Gandhi.

- In 2018, Lamba along with 19 other AAP MLAs were disqualified by the Election Commission of India in the Profit Office case. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind also approved their disqualification. However, she moved the Delhi High Court challenging the ruling of the Election Commission and other MLAs.
- In 2016, Alka Lamba met victims of sexual harassment cases in Guwahati at a packed press conference. Alka was widely criticized for revealing the victim’s identity in the media. She has since been removed from the National Commission for Women (NCW) fact-finding team.
- In 2015, she was charged with vandalism for severely damaging a liquor shop near the Kashmiri Gate area of Old Delhi. Surveillance video showed her leading the attack and instructing her supporters to throw things away. According to reports, the owner of the shop is a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party and refused to allow AAP workers to put their party posters on the windows of the shop.
